Gwen Stefani Wants to Be Reincarnated as Her Hairstylist

When it comes to having the picture-perfect red pout, no one pulls off the look better than Gwen Stefani. The same can also be said about her camera-ready hairdos (especially with those black-dyed tips as of late), thanks to her longtime hairstylist, Danilo, whom she met when attending her first-ever fashion week show years ago.

"Danilo was doing the hair and that's when I met him, and he was already a rock star," recalls Stefani, who graces one of The Hollywood Reporter's Beauty Issue covers with her go-to hairstylist, of meeting him at a Vivienne Westwood presentation. "At that time, it was a big deal to spend money on a rock-star dresser. We flew him in from New York and we did the 'Simple Kind of Life' video and he did this really big pink afro. I was addicted to him ever since."

Not only have they grown inseparable, the duo even share a similar style, as they appeared on THR's cover shoot in matching yet unplanned black-and-white ensembles. "We do feel each other, we're in sync with each other," says Danilo in between posing with The Voice coach, who donned a polka dot Alexandre Vautheir gown with Christian Louboutin pumps.

"He's so in my life. I would have never dreamed of knowing someone like Danilo. One day in my reincarnation, I'm going to be you," says Stefani jokingly to her hair guru.

And, as if speaking on behalf of a million other women in this world, Danilo responds with a laugh: "And I'll be you."

This is Lizzy Caplan's Favorite Beauty Moment, Ever

Between all of the movie premieres, awards shows and star-studded events, actress Lizzy Caplan has had a lot of red-carpet looks. Her favorite?

"The Emmys," reveals the Masters of Sex actress during a sit-down with her makeup artist Sabrina Bedrani for THR's Beauty Issue. "Everybody was working toward one uniform look rather than trying to make it about one specific element."

"I think because the dress was so simple and so chic and showed a lot of skin, we wanted to go for something a little more dramatic," explains Bedrani, whose celebrity clientele also includes Sandra Bullock and Jessica Biel.

The duo have been working together since an Elle magazine cover that Caplan did for her 2012 dramedy Bachelorette.

When asked what they like best about working with one another, Bedrani said, "The stuff that comes out of her mouth," while Caplan quickly offered: "The accent."

Of the Parisian makeup artist, Caplan said: "There is nothing chicer than a French woman."

5 Ways Michelle Phan Makes Her Makeup Last

Michelle Phan didn’t start wearing full makeup until age 18, yet less than 10 years later, at age 27, she’s one of the Internet’s foremost authorities on beauty. “I fell in love with the transformed version of myself,” she says, recalling the first time her mother taught her how to wear eyeliner. Today, more than 7 million YouTube subscribers turn to Phan for their own lessons in beauty, from makeup tutorials and how-tos, down to the art of perfecting selfies.

But it’s not just her trend-savvy and user-friendly video content that’s garnered Phan her fan base; she’s also a serious entrepreneur who's parlayed her expertise and digital know-how into a number of successful partnerships and launches. These include Em, her makeup line collaboration with L’Oreal, and the uber-popular Ipsy, a rapidly growing beauty site and product subscription service that attracts beauty lovers with its low $10-a-month fee and exclusive online content. “We support a lot of mom-and-pop beauty brands, especially those who are just starting out and want to get into the market,” says L.A.-based Phan, who is very hands-on in the product selection process and currently has her eye on up-and-coming brands including Pacifica and Lime Crime. “This is a great way to advertise and to reach over 700,000 people who are beauty fanatics, so you know for sure they are going to use your products. Also, they are very social online. They are taking pictures of it, tweeting about it, using it in their videos, so they get a lot of love.”

Phan is also approaching her latest venture with this same level of passion: a newly announced join venture with Cutting Edge Group called Shift Music Group, designed to use social media to help promote and spread awareness for emerging music artists. "Beauty is art and so is music,” says Phan on how her background ties in with the partnership. “When you think about getting ready in the morning, a lot of people they always have music playing. They get ready to their music; it's their routine, it's their ritual. … Beauty plays a huge role in music too because you have to look at the artist. As a musician you have a look — you have a certain look that you really go by, and I really feel like they go hand in hand with each other.” Up first? The Late Night Alumni, a U.S. house group whose music is already making its way into Phan’s beauty videos.

Fresh on the heels of her tour to promote her first book, Make Up: Your Guide to Beauty, Style and Success Online and Off, Phan invited Pret-a-Reporter into her Los Angeles studio to talk playlists, makeup idols and business advice, and to give us her top five makeup tips for making a face last from first business meeting all the way to last call.

Jessica Chastain Doesn't Look in the Mirror Before a Red Carpet

"I don't like the red carpet," Chastain admits during her cover shoot with makeup maven Kristofer Buckle and hair guru Renato Campora for The Hollywood Reporter's Beauty Issue. "I find it kind of uncomfortable, but when I work with Kris and Renato, they do their magic and I feel like a different character."

Indeed they do, as they've worked on countless occasions together to create some major red-carpet moments for the Interstellar star.

"Often times, there's no mirror in sight and where she's done, I'm like, 'Would you like to look?' " says Buckle, noting that Chastain places a strong amount of trust on her glam squad. The Golden Globe winner is quick to point out, though, "We do talk before so it's not like I look in the mirror and it's something crazy. They definitely — which I love about them — include me and my personality in their work. I completely trust them."

But not everyone can always pull off glamour with grace — that is, unless it's Chastain. "She really lives the looks she's wearing," Buckle says of the actress. "There's a lot of people that you can dress up and doll up and put them out there, but it will takes a special someone to bring it to life."

Emily Blunt's Beauty Matchmaker: Husband John Krasinski

Makeup artist Jenn Streicher may have met John Krasinski first, but it was his wife, actress Emily Blunt, whom she really wanted to work with.

"I was like, 'Um, by the way, if your girlfriend ever needs anybody to do her makeup, let me know," recalls Streicher of what she told the Office alum. Blunt also notes: "She said, 'I want to get my hands on that face.' She did and it's been on my face ever since."

One of this year's most memorable makeup moments for the British beauty was her back-to-back-to-back Edge of Tomorrow premiere appearances, which included a "light eye, berry lip" look in London and "a very dark, angular, dynamic eye" for the Paris screening. Though it might be hard to believe, that latter look was done in the airplane toilet, which, Blunt says with a chuckle, "was pretty cool."

As for whether or not the makeup maven still sees Blunt's husband, she says, "I don't see John very much anymore. No." Sorry, John.

Kerry Washington Grew Up With Her Makeup Artist

Remember when Kerry Washington arrived in a strapless orange Prada gown with bold navy eyes to finish off her stunning look at this year's Emmys? That happens to be one of the major highlights for both the Scandal star and her longtime makeup artist, Carola Gonzalez.

"It was a great metallic blue," says Gonzalez, who appears in this year's Hollywood Reporter Beauty Issue with Washington, of one of her favorite 2014 beauty moments. "I think it was just the perfect choice for the dress."

Having worked with Gonzalez for the last 10 years, the Golden Globe-nominated actress says she appreciates her makeup guru for looking at her red-carpet outfits and finding "a way to have my face embody the whole look of the moment. I always feel like myself, but I feel like the look is complete."

So, exactly how much does she trust Gonzalez with her appearance? "She could do my face in the dark, and I actually want to blindfold her one day, just to see what happens because I think she could do it," Washington says jokingly (or not).

For Gonzalez, the one thing you can always find her fine-tuning is the actress' eyebrows.

"I really can't see a hair out of place when it comes to eyebrows. It makes me sick to my stomach," shares the makeup maven while sitting alongside her client during their THR shoot. "I only look at yours and mine. I don't care about anyone else's."

Hollywood's Top 25 Beauty Moments of 2014

When a star makes a showstopping turn on the red carpet, her face can launch a thousand lips — or lipstick sales: Angelina Jolie's devilishly red pout (THR beauty moment No. 17) helped the corresponding color in the MAC Maleficent collection sell out in weeks. A Hollywood look also can reposition an actress, a la Lizzy Caplan's Emmy moment (No. 18), or help her land a major contract. Note Lupita Nyong'o's multimillion-dollar Lancome dealBeyond the Lights' Gugu Mbatha-Raw certainly did (No. 23), and quickly added Nyong'o's glam squad to her speed-dial. Which is why a look that gets people (and beauty bloggers) talking about a star's makeup — or lack of it, as in Jennifer Aniston's much-debated makeup-less face in her upcoming film Cake — can have an impact that outlasts even the longest-wear mascara.

In 2014, the looks that packed the biggest punch all resonated with calculated drama. Attention-drawing pink pouts proliferated, including Emily Blunt's carefully clashing Pepto Bismol lips against her red Prada gown at her New York Edge of Tomorrow premiere (No. 2). The artful placement of white blooms on the nape of Sarah Jessica Parker's neck focused the world's eyes on the elaborate train of her Oscar de la Renta gown at the Met Gala (No. 5).

With so much at stake, new faces such as Mbatha-Raw and Felicity Jones (No. 25) might wish to follow the lead of such A-list veterans as Gwen Stefani, Salma Hayek and Cameron Diaz (Nos. 3, 9 and 12), all over 40. They keep gorgeous, glam and relevant by relying on their longtime beauty pros, who make up partnerships that outlast many Hollywood marriages. Call it a mix of loyalty and the smartest kind of calculation.
