stop telling girls interested in lit that they need to read these great american classics by violent misogynists in order for their opinions to be valid or for their minds to be developed

lux-obscura

I literally didn’t realise, until I was a grown-ass adult and then some, that the reason I hated “The Canon” was NOT because I was stupid, poorly read, or anything to do with me: It was because every book in “The Classical Literary Canon” was written by a white guy navel-gazing about HOW HARD his life was and how he needed to go one some SPIRITUAL JOURNEY to find ENLIGHTENMENT but instead he wrote a book about some guy doing all the stuff he wished he could do. While standing on the backs of women the entire time. My 12th Grade AP Lit teacher gave me a copy of Kate Chopin’s The Awakening and Charlotte Perkins-Gillman’s The Yellow Wallpaper and that was the first inkling I had that maybe I could RELATE to literature instead of just enduring it. Down with white cis male literary canon. We want stories we can relate to, not stories that tear us down.

A lot of you have reached out to me to ask what you can do to help Orlando right now. It seems like something on the bottom of everyone’s list, but dozens of Pulse employees who survived the shooting lost their jobs. I can’t imagine grieving my friends and on top of that having to worry about paying rent, phone bills, electricity, etc. between attending funerals and looking for another gig. Please remember that gay bars are places where so many people turn to when they can’t find employment elsewhere. Pulse hired transgender, genderqueer, gay, lesbian, and bisexual people who are going to have a really difficult time finding somewhere else that will accept them. Separate funding campaigns have raised a ton of money to support families of the victims and the injured that are still recovering in the hospital, but Pulse employees still need your help.

I know several of the employees. One is trying to get her master’s in education, another is 23 and a full time drag queen with so much potential that has made me laugh so many times and has volunteered her time to perform at several charities around town. They don’t want to ask for your money.

If you truly meant it when you asked me what you can do, please give these beautiful, hurt people money: http://www.pulseorlandoclub.com

Your condolences and kind words are really encouraging and a crucial part of the recovery process, but this is a way you can help in a concrete, practical way.
