being gay is just like. damn it tattoos are expensive. damn it piercings are expensive. damn it getting your hair dyed professionally is expensive. damn it combat boots are expensive. damn it therapy is
One of the weirdest things as a Millennial is explaining DIY to younger generations. Like, before we were couture, punk/alternative/goth/gay fashion was cheap and lowkey crappy. Army surplus boots and Doc Martens hurt to break in. Black was a popular hair colour because you didn’t have to bleach your hair first so you could do your own hair in the bathroom sink. You sewed patches onto a jean jacket because it was cheaper than buying a custom graphic t-shirt. If you wanted jeans ripped, you ripped them yourself. The point was fashion that was accessible to kids in Middle America.
But now the bar is so much higher and nobody gets Home Economics anymore. :/
Billy Idol said that when they formed punk band Generation X in the 70′s, the band intentionally made all their own stuff at home so that fans could copy the band’s stuff/style at home, too. That was the base of the punk spirit aesthetic: DIY and let it be however crappy it is, as long as you like it.
being born in the late 90′s is a really weird time because our coming of age is/was so tied into the expansion of personal technology? like for so many of us the transition from getting your first flip phone to smartphones wasn’t just a technology shift, it was part of growing up. and it created this really weird timeline where new technologies were being created right as we entered the right age market to use them, so now we all know intuitively how to use snapchat or the social context of emoji use or whatever but we can also remember childhoods spent (almost) entirely outside and offline. like you get all the disillusionment of the older millennial generation except now with the stress of spending your adolescence measuring yourself against others on social media and it’s really fucking confusing
you put it into words

Well if anyone wondered what Wales is getting up to during the Quarantine, someone set up a Facebook group called Côr-ona ("côr" being the Welsh word for choir), and are using it to teach each other descants for famous Welsh music and songs. It was set up three days ago and already has 10000 members. One of those was an accidentally-added non-Welsh speaker who is very confused, but everyone is delighted by his bewildered presence. Occasionally someone will go for a walk on a beach or mountain and upload a video of themselves singing one of the descants they've learned.
This is the most quintessentially Welsh response possible, and I would expect no less.
Update: it has been 4 days and we are up to 17,000 members. Several non-Welsh speakers have joined, all of whom are saying things like "I have no idea what any of you are saying but the singing is beautiful", to which they are inundated with "Welcome! You can learn on Duolingo! Enjoy the singing!" messages.
Today is Dydd Gwener Gwerin, or Folk Friday. Might upload an alto/tenor version of y Fwyalchen later.
if the amount of Welsh speakers actually rises because of coronavirus I will fucking scream
