NEW: Malware threat via text files with links

[April 7, 2024]

Do NOT download or follow links from these fake mods:

  •     “S4 CAS Tools” on Nexus from user fubruss
  •     “Loading Screen Randomizer” on Nexus from user fubruss
  •     anything else from the Nexus user fubruss.

These are NOT the Sims mods they claim to be. They are text files with links leading to malware.

No legitimate mod download will EVER consist of only a text file (a file ending in .txt).  Be alert for other versions of this way of spreading malware.

If you downloaded either of these, delete them NOW and run a virus scan. NOTE: This malware does NOT require that you run the game for it to install itself, and is not what ModGuard is designed to detect and stop.

This is also another case of mod-spoofing, using the names of legitimate mods. The legit mods are S4 CAS Tools by the late CmarNYC (Mod the Sims, dated 18 March 2023) and Loading Screen Randomizer by Tesuto (Mod the Sims, dated 9 January 2024).

Much gratitude to Tumblr Simmer 1-800-cuupid!

RIP, CmarNYC

I’m very sad to report that Sims 3 and 4 creator CmarNYC passed away in October 2023. For 15 years, Simmers benefited from Cmar’s long-honed computing skills as she created much-loved modders’ and players’ tools, including the Sims 3 and 4 MorphMakers and Skininators, the TS4 SimRipper, the Sims 3 XCAS core mod, and many CAS sliders. She was also a contributor to S4PE, which likely was used by creators you rely on. Without Cmar’s work, the Sims franchise would have had a much less rich array of mods and custom content. She will be greatly missed.

As well as Sims, Cmar loved cats, and donations are suggested to the ASPCA, the TinyKittens Society, or an animal-related charity near you.

This made me genuinely so sad to hear. It really got me thinking how much I took for granted what this woman gave us, and my life personally. She genuinely altered the landscape of this community, without her and without SimRipper, there would be no Sims Blender Community. Her work allowed me to move my characters outside of the confines of the game into a place where I could truly make anything happen. Her singular tool changed my life, giving me the passion for 3D, to learn and do more, and make things happen I could never have done otherwise, and it never even occurred to me to reach out and thank her. I've really got to do better. May she rest in absolute peace, a wonderful talent and gift to us all, and I'll keep her loved ones in my dearest thoughts. ♥

Henry is literally the only reason a live action Geralt of Rivia worked in the first place. And it has nothing to do with him being a big fit dude but everything to do with him being a huge nerd and a bigass fan of the books and the video games. He knew this character. He was literally on set discussing with the show runners what Geralt would or wouldn’t do. This show only worked because Henry was the One good choice for Geralt. Just cancel your fucking show.

i love you sims story tellers, sims legacy players, sims casual players, sims cc creators and modders (that aren't unhinged, power-tripping freaks), sims builders, sims fans, sims shit posters, sims render makers, sims edit makers, sims lookbook makers. you all made and are continuing to make lemonade out of lemons and you should be proud of that.

Are you able to update the realistic walls pack? I love them sooooo much but ever since the new update, it doesn't work :( instead of the texture it just shows up as a plain colored wall. Thank you soo much!

Hey there! I’m so so sorry to read that! 😞 I’ve only heard of this issue before when people were trying to use them on medium or tall walls, because that doesn’t work indeed. Sometimes when I’m starting to build, the game automatically uses medium walls and I have to check first to make sure it’s set to the short wall option. Have you tried that? 🥴 I’ve only made these wallpapers for short walls back then, since I basically never use medium or tall ones when building… I had to update my game this week as well and they still work all fine for me on short walls, so I have absolutely no idea where to look for the issue. 😩 if anyone could help though, it’d be much appreciated! 🥹🙏🏼

On monetizing mods:

The pushback I’m seeing against EA’s no-paywalling policy is honestly…bizarre to me?

I’ve played a lot of games, but The Sims is the only one I’ve played that let other people profit off their IP. Imagine trying to monetize fanworks from any other game without the IP holder getting a cut of the profits… Bethesda? Rockstar? Blizzard? Nintendo? I’m sorry, but EA was being generous by allowing people to make money off their game assets in the first place. Other gaming companies would have just sued.

(** Any company would have a problem, not just games–imagine if EA was Disney. You can’t put so much as a Mickey Mouse silhouette on something and sell it without getting hit with a prompt cease-and-desist.)

I’m not sure if people are being purposely obtuse or if they really just don’t understand how IP laws (or user agreement contracts, which everyone who downloaded the game agreed to) work. “Don’t sell someone else’s intellectual property for a living” feels like a statement that shouldn’t need to be made. Whether you like EA as a company or not, IP laws either matter or they don’t–you can’t pick and choose when laws apply based on how you feel about the IP holder, or how much you think you deserve that money more.

It just doesn’t work like that. It never has.

As far as how this all affects the community…again: other games just don’t have this problem, so I’m not understanding the issue. Banning paywalled mods won’t hurt the community in the slightest. Skyrim modders consistently put out professional quality mods for free, because that’s just…how it is in other gaming communities? They make mods because they love the game. This monetization issue doesn’t exist for other games in the same capacity as it does for The Sims. (And even for Sims, it didn’t used to be this bad.)

In summary: EA’s newest policy update isn’t a shock, nor is it any kind of betrayal of the community. It’s just basic IP law and common sense/decency. 🤷

I understand people feel entitled to compensation for their work, but that just doesn’t apply to fanworks, and it never has. This is the wrong creative outlet for you if your primary goal is profit, in the same way fanfiction would be wrong for you. If you want to make money off making 3D models, you are perfectly free to do so on any number of sites created specifically for that. (TurboSquid, CGTrader, etc.) The Sims isn’t the place for it. Sorry.

THIS.

I could not have said this better myself. So I won’t.

No one put a gun to anyone’s head and said “YOU MUST MAKE US CC”.  Presumably you did it for the joy of it at one point. You’re using someone else’s trademarked, highly-recognisable intellectual property.  You are not in the right here and never have been regardless of how much work you’ve put into your little “business”.  EA have been exceedingly generous to allow this to continue as long as it has and unfortunately it was the pay-wallers who have ruined it for everyone. I honestly believe that EA would have been happy to turn a blind eye to everyone if the doxing thing hadn’t happened.

The rabid CC-for-profit people really only have themselves to blame. And as much as I feel for those who are/were using the early access model who may lose a source of income, the fact still remains that they were doing so on EA’s good graces.

I play so many games where mods- hell- entire modded servers filled with user-made content are created and made accessible at NO cost to the end user.  Creators throw all of their efforts into ensuring that their mods are up-to-date.

AT. NO. COST.

The Sims is literally the only franchise where the monetisation of mods is a thing.

There are so many TALENTED model-makers and creators in this community. Look for something official - like a real job with game developers. I could list at least 10 people who are definitely good enough to do this sort of stuff in an official sense and I really hope that they look into it.

(So at the time of writing this, EA support - not official Sims folks - have actually come out and said that even the “early access” model for remuneration for CC creators is a no-go. I am sure an official statement will be posted in the not too distant future. This is going to be interesting.)

kinda disheartening to see so many ppl leave the community because of the new EA policy.. just kinda proves u were just in it for the money and not for the game itself and the joy of creating :/

just to clarify some things, i don’t think there’s anything wrong with getting compensated for your time and effort. everyone is entitled to have a roof over their heads and access to hot meals. however!! i don’t think we should be approaching creating custom content for a bunch of pixels as a business to the point where you would leave the community simply because you cannot profit from it anymore.

i get why people would monetize their creations, i really do. money is tight - especially given current circumstances. creators also may not have the proper resources and/or funds to be able to support themselves through the means available to them other than cc creation.

however, it is important that we recognize that the community is more than just a means for you to make money from. as i previously said, money is tight, and that’s true for EVERYONE. just because you have dire circumstances does not mean everyone else is automatically doing better. we’re all struggling. as such, it feels icky to me when someone starts cc creating solely for monetary reasons.

however, as i previously stated, getting compensated financially for your content does not make you a bad person. i even think that a creator having their content be early access is okay (as long as it follows the 2-3 weeks guidelines). however, i think there should be at least some interaction with the community (and not just to other cc creators to promote their new set btw). this is not to police anyone for their actions on tumblr dot com btw. do whatever you want. i’m just some small simblr lmao, i cannot reprimand you for what you do or do not do.

idk. i guess what i’m trying to say is that we as a community should do better. it’s high time we learn our worth and try to not be enticed by shiny objects like a bunch of birds. let’s just enjoy the game (no matter how much it sucks lmao)

S/o to custom content creators in the sims community who take the time and patience outta their day to draw up tutorials, and help other simmers create things too, share their content confidently with open TOU’s, and provide links for helpful tools and resources as soon as they drop.

We’re a stronger community when we work together, especially when that community isn’t as big and popular as it used to be, but still going strong due to the love and joy it continues to bring us.
