CITIZEN: IT HAS BEEN 237 YEARS SINCE YOU ENTERED YOUR CRYOCHAMBER. THE NATION YOU ONCE BELONGED TO, THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, NOW CONSISTS OF 50 AUTONOMOUS CITY-STATES EXISTING TOGETHER IN A LARGER POLITICAL UNION, THE CONFEDERAL NATIONS OF AMERICA. THESE NATIONS ARE ARRANGED PRIMARILY ON THE PRINCIPLE OF CIRCUMFERENTIAL DISTANCE TO THE NEAREST ECONOMICALLY POWERFUL METROPOLITAN AREA. SELECT YOUR PREVIOUS PLACE OF LIVING FOR YOUR NEW CITIZENSHIP

Excuse me the entire population of Maine would die before letting Massachusetts have them again

CITIZEN: IT HAS BEEN 237 YEARS. THE GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO EXISTED IN YOUR TIME AS “THE ENTIRE POPULATION OF MAINE” HAS IN FACT DIED

Near as I can tell from just eyeballing it (which is as much work as I’m willing to do), I’m right on the cusp between Denver, Kansas City and Minneapolis

I’m pretty sure the people of Upstate New York would die before being associated with New York City.

books I’ve read in 2022 📖 no. 034

Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr

“A text—a book—is a resting place for the memories of people who have lived before. A way for the memory to stay fixed after the soul has traveled on. But books, like people, die. They die in fires or floods or in the mouths of worms or at the whims of tyrants. If they are not safeguarded, they go out of the world. And when a book goes out of the world, the memory dies a second death.”

people have the audacity to equate vanilla with “plain”. the fruit of a delicate orchid pollinated by hand. worth its weight in solid gold and beyond. the fussy black-and-cream jewel of the american continent. you sick son of a bitch. imagine a world without vanilla. no blondies. no pound cakes. no crème brûlée, no coke floats. no cream soda. no satiny new york-style cheesecakes. no warm apple pie à la mode. no velvety complexity to bring out complex notes in chocolate desserts. no depth of flavour in your cakes and cookies and milkshakes. all in just a few precious seeds or grams of paste or perfumed teaspoons of liquid black platinum. what you don’t understand could fill the library of alexandria seven times over and then some. you ungrateful bastard i’m going to kill you
