I’ve seen this one doing the rounds a few times (and it makes me cry every time I see it), but was curious about the original Latin text, so I did some digging: it’s a shortened version of CIL 10, 00659, a tombstone from Salernum (modern Salerno, Italy). (source; CIL is the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum).

Portaui lacrimis madidus te, nostra catella,
Quod feci lustris laetior ante tribus.
Ergo mihi, Patrice, iam non dabis oscula mille
Nec poteris collo grata cubare meo.
Tristis marmorea posui te sede merentem
Et iunxi semper manib(us) ipse meis
Morib(us) argutis hominem simulare paratam,
     Perdidimus quales hei mihi delicias.
Tu, dulcis Patrice, nostras attingere mensas
    Consueras, gremio poscere blanda cibos,
Lambere tu calicem lingua rapiente solebas,
Quem tibi saepe meae sustinuere manus,
Accipere et lassum cauda gaudente frequenter

And here’s my translation:

Wet with tears I have carried you, our little (female) dog, just as I did in happier times fifteen years earlier (lit. “three periods of five years).  For myself, Patrice, now you will not give me a thousand kisses nor will you be able to lie lovingly around/against my neck.  I have sorrowfully placed you, merit-worthy, in a marble tomb and I have joined you always to myself in death, as by your cleverness you matched a human.  Alas, we lost such pleasures for myself!  You, sweet Patrice, were accustomed to join us at our table, to beg charmingly for food (while sitting in our) laps.  You were in the habit of greedily licking our cups with your tongue, which my hands often held for you.  Frequently and joyfully (you) receive a weary one with your (wagging) tail...

tl;dr: this dog was named Patrice and was very, very loved.  (another translation with some glossing of the text.)

Nice whumpy thing: when people are intensely pragmatic about their injuries illnesses.

“Listen, if I pass out…”

“If you let up pressure, I’ll bleed out. So just, don’t move.”

“I know it ill hurt, just do what you need to.”

#these are all so good #i’m always especially appreciative of the # ‘i’m going to scream. this is going to hurt and i won’t be able to help it. keep going anyway’ # but i think my very favorite is ‘you’re going to have to pin me down’ # (also this isn’t quite the same feeling but the polite ‘i’m sorry but i think i’m going to pass out now’ always delights me) (x)

Update: after I reblogged this someone messaged me offering me tickets to the sold out Hausu screening with a Q&A and autograph session with the director

These never work for me, but here’s to trying.

  1. I don’t believe in these things
  2. But last time I reblogged one ten/fifteen minutes later I got a call offering me a job
  3. But I reblogged it because I was waiting on hearing back from the job. So there you go.
  4. Roger is cute.

Eh Roger is cute I might as well

•Normalize Fanart for Fanfics Again You Fools•

It's not cringe anymore (it SHOULDN'T be cringe anymore), just do it. You're doing something you enjoy, who cares what anybody else says! So spread the words my fellow internet brethren.

Spread the Word :)

I give folks permission to make fan art of anything I've written.

I feel honoured when someone makes fanart of my story because I always want to give up but seeing people loving what I write and even drawing it gives me enough will to never stop!

As someone who loves drawing & writing, I think drawing Fanart for Fanfics is just another way to keep sharp while showing support to the writers I am fond of. Besides, it's thanks to writers like @toast-on-dandelioms that I have a new OC to add to my collection. Thanks for that, by the way.

I was at a writing festival on the weekend (as an editor; I was doing free editing sessions). I entered their haiku contest because one of the volunteers strong-armed me.

I just got an email saying I won 1st prize. And an honorable mention.

Which is hilarious, because I don’t actually have copies of the poems. One was about rain, one was about Persephone, and one was about banshees (and @dearophelia).

I hope it’s the one about Sara that won.

forget Resting Bitch Face, I have Resting Competent Face. People see me and think ah yes she can point me to the nearest train station. Fellow grocery shoppers ask if I know what kind of butter they should buy. If a strange man speaks to me on the street it is literally always an inquiry and never a catcall. Once someone randomly asked me what an equinox was and after I told her she nodded and said "you seemed like you'd know." why am I assigned oracle at random interaction

Don’t Hesitate by Mary Oliver

If you suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy, don’t hesitate. Give in to it. There are plenty of lives and whole towns destroyed or about to be. We are not wise, and not very often kind. And much can never be redeemed. Still, life has some possibility left. Perhaps this is its way of fighting back, that sometimes something happens better than all the riches or power in the world. It could be anything, but very likely you notice it in the instant when love begins. Anyway, that’s often the case. Anyway, whatever it is, don’t be afraid of its plenty. Joy is not made to be a crumb.

Just read a fascinating report on book sales in Canada for 2023. Lots of info, but something I found particularly interesting is that romance sales were up 9% overall from 2022.

The genre driving that rise? Romantasy. Contemporary, rom com, and regency were all down (5%, 9%, and 35% respectively), while romantasy was up a whopping 235%. And yes, a lot of that momentum comes from social media and #booktok

They broke romantasy down further:

Adult fantasy/romance: +57% (presumably fantasy with a romantic subplot vs below, where it’s a romance in a fantasy setting?)

Adult romance/fantasy: +235%

YA fantasy/romance: +331%

So, anyway, the takeaway is this: all those romance and/or fantasy haters may be noisy, but they’re definitely in the wrong side of market growth and spending power.

(Go forth and make your fantasy characters kiss, my darlings. Turns out that while we’re living in a dystopian hellscape, our preferred form of storytelling escapism is people with swords and fancy clothes kissing. Sold.)

orrrrr they just grew up in this tech focused privacy lacking world

current university students, assuming they went to university at 18 (which would be most of the first years) were maybe 4 when smartphones got popular? the world they have grown up with is one where apps are the only way one interacts with technology, where social media increasingly demands personal information, where someone who refuses to go along with those norms automatically has something to hide, which means everyone polices themselves as if their every fashion choice or sentence structure is subject to judge and jury, because it is

we live in an age which discourages asking questions, where every question is met with offense and "just google it", while google itself fills its entire first page with ads and misinformation

and tumblr is the only place i've seen critique chatgpt. i've had windows 11 (which every laptop comes with these days) advertise chatgpt to me as a search engine

it's not a search engine. frankly, google hardly counts as one either these days. but if you're not surrounded by people telling you chatgpt is bad and fake, how are you supposed to know? when your computer and your phone and your relatives who don't know much more about technology than you all think it's a search engine with a voice, it wouldn't occur to you that all of them are wrong

and they're clearly not stupid! that's the point of this as an exercise - their teacher is telling them for the first time that chatgpt might be wrong. your job is to find out if chatgpt is wrong. and they did the assignment! they had a reason for the first time to question chatgpt, and all of them came to the conclusion that yeah, it is lying to us, and so is everyone else who said it was always right

and they'll go forward now not only knowing they can't blindly trust what computers tell them, but they'll spread that message around, which will decrease misinformation on a bunch of levels

this was a win for the students and a win for the teacher, i think an exercise like this should be mandatory in all schools if we ever hope to combat where technology's going these days

How is TUMBLR the only place that seems to be critical of the PLAGIARISM AND MISINFORMATION MACHINE?!?!

It's not just Windows 11. ChatGPT is REPEATEDLY advertised to my office as the latest greatest research tool that will save us all so much time and money - I work in a public accounting firm. We do people's taxes. We do audit and attestation. ChatGPT is NOT something I EVER want to see us use.

Okay folks. I know far too many people in the tech industry who (1) have advanced degrees in computer science (some with masters degrees, but most of them with phds in computer science from highly ranked universities) and (2) WHO WORK FOR THE COMPANIES THAT ARE FUNDING THIS AI ARMS RACE.

So, over the winter holiday I was visiting with a bunch of these highly educated, highly knowledgeable people and all of them literally believed that ChatGTP was mostly good and mostly gave good advice.

They literally believed that it would help people do research and write documents.

The ONLY PERSON WHO HAD DOUBTS -- but those doubts were mild -- was someone who was using AI code assist while programming and was disappointed that ~30% of the code it spat out was wrong. But this person was willing to give AI credit bc all of the higher ups were singing its praises and because "it would get better because this is just the beginning."

I, on the other hand, had a lot to say about what was wrong, completed with all of the examples I have generated in my spare time during 2023. And, despite my background (professional), all of these folks looked at me as if I was some crazy dumbass who knew nothing.

This level of belief in bullshit will continue until the current AI-driven stock market bubble bursts.
