“You’ve got me there,” Lucan admitted. “Maybe the rub is that we’re saddled with just one name when we should have many. I’m not the same person I was as a child- no one is. But if you’re nickname is given to you by a friend, and you like it, you’re one of the lucky ones.” He could hear the affection Bucky had for this friend… It almost sounded mournful, like the friend had passed away long ago, but he didn’t inquire about that. He didn’t want to ruin the light, pleasant tone they’d established. “And don’t worry about it. If you want to repay me, you can be first to try this and tell me if its good or not.” Lucan was only half joking; he was never quite as adventurous with food as he made himself out to be.

“Well, no matter how many names we have, we’ll always resent one or two of them,” he responded, thinking of the times he was referred to as “The Asset” or “The Winter Soldier”. He was neither of those people, and yet, those names were his.

Bucky laughed lightly as Lucan told him how he could repay him. “I could definitely do that, but I should warn you that this is gourmet compared to some of the shit I’ve had to eat,” he warned with a warm grin.

“I can go back to the ruins if I slip again. No offense, but your kind hasn’t been the greatest help. Getting shot once was bad enough and I don’t do well in captivity.”

“My kind? What does that even mean? First of all, you should have never been shot. Secondly, if anyone tries to put you on lock down, they’ll have to go through me this time. If there’s anyone who understands what you’re going through, it’s me.”

“Yes, James darling, that’s right.”

“You, you probably don’t remember me,” the woman spoke, making her accent known, “but I remember you. Very well. You used to be my idol, before I got smart and got myself out of that place,” she spoke to him vaguely. This wasn’t the place for horror stories, those could come later when he didn’t have HYDRA on his as. 

“The man you talked to, the men that are coming after you. They are HYDRA. Run a fighting ring. Most are young, prisoners with special abilities. Most die,” she explained to him as she took over her jacket and jumped up to a fire escape. “They want you to be their next prize fighter,” she added from above, only to crouch down and offer him her hand: “Now com’on.”

Bucky scanned her face and listened to her voice as she spoke, desperately trying to remember her. “What place? HYDRA?” he questioned, eyes narrowing slightly as he tried to recall whether or not she was there, let alone whether or not he can be trusted.

He swallowed thickly as he looked over his shoulder, taking in his environment before he looked back up at the mystery woman. Even if she wasn’t an ally, he was still fairly certain it’d be easier to take on just her as opposed to a group of HYDRA agents. He jumped up and gripped onto the railing, pulling himself up onto the fire escape.

Everyone has been talking about Bucky taking a hit for Sam from that unitard wearing fetus, but I’m more stuck on the fact that this fool that can outrun cars is keeping pace with my bird prince while going through the terminal when he could have honestly just hauled ass for the quinjet and I really think that’s a beautiful thing

When he was younger, he had often times wondered what it would be like to have a family, but when he went off to war, the hope he had for such a thing dissipated. And now, standing before him, was the most beautiful girl telling him she was his daughter. He reached his human hand up and touched her cheek with his fingertips. “My beautiful baby girl,” he breathed, happy tears glazing his eyes.

Look at the fear in his eyes in that last gif. This may be the first time the Winter Soldier has ever lost a fight. If he lost a fight on a mission he would die, as simple as that (unless he was captured, but my headcanon is that HYDRA would have programed contingencies for that, because they wouldn’t want anyone else getting their hands on their Asset.) And even during training they would have wanted to drill into him that failure was never an option so the consequences would have been severe and painful. He doesn’t remember much but he knows there are consequences for failure.

Yes! His facial expression and body language thought this whole scene is very interesting. And when his handler orders him to get him out of there the Winter Soldier puts himself in front, exposing himself to the very same people who just proved they could defeat him, and the message is clear that the Winter Soldier would die for him.

This is very interesting to me. In that deleted scene in CA:TFA we see Bucky and his fellow soldiers surrendering, choosing life (and the inevitable torture associated with being a HYDRA POW) over dying in a fight they couldn’t win. Before the HYDRA torture Bucky was more concerned with living than avoiding pain but that’s all changed by this scene. HYDRA has put him through so much that he doesn’t think twice about choosing death over whatever torture HYDRA would subject him to if he failed his mission.
