Absolutely vital information to have if you live where the waters freeze over.

I especially appreciate this guy's commitment to actually showing the steps himself. That cold-shock response is a bitch and willingly subjecting himself to it couldn't have been fun.

I don’t live anywhere near water like this, but I am still memorizing this knowledge because:

* I might use it in a story someday.

* Any knowledge that staves off the dying is good knowledge.

This is so great because if anyone is caught impeding or messing with these deliveries, it’s MAIL, that makes it a FEDERAL crime, whoever fucks with these packages gets charged FEDERALLY, they face up to five years in prison.

[ID: A tweet by @ nytimes that reads, "Breaking News: Women can get abortion pills by mail for pregnancies up to 10 weeks without seeing a doctor in person, the FDA ruled. The decision comes as the Supreme Court considers whether to roll back abortion rights or even overturn Roe v. Wade." Attached is a link to the article and a screenshot of the title and subtitle of the article. The article was published Dec 16, 2021. The title reads, "F.D.A. Will Permanently Allow Abortion Pills by Mail" and the subtitle reads, "The decision will broaden access to medication abortion, an increasingly common method, but many conservative states are already mobilizing against it." /end ID]

Resources for anyone that ends up in a restricted state:

Aid Access - they can send you the abortion pill even if you live in a restricted state.

PLUS, you do not have to be pregnant to order them. You can order to have on hand, in case of an emergency.

Repro Legal Helpline (reprolegalhelpline.org) -

Some of the things they can help with above.

Miscarriage + Abortion Hotline (mahotline.org) -

They have a ton of information, and resources in one place.

Also, if you find yourself in a restricted state, you need to be careful of how and with whom you are talking about it. You need to use safe, encrypted messaging and calling.

I also recommend removing any biometric information for unlocking your phone. Use a PIN or password instead of a fingerprint or facial recognition.

So I kind of hate that Putin is trying to restrict the flow of information into Russia so that he can control the narrative, so for my Russian friends, here is my guide on

How to get around internet censorship and maintain internet privacy

This will be an extremely long post 😅

Priorities

  • Download the Tor Browser
  • This will hopefully help you access the internet regardless of Russian government bans. It’s a little slow, but better than nothing. It hides your IP address from the internet, so it’s kind of like using a VPN. A very basic summary of how Tor works: your internet traffic is routed through several “nodes”. The Entry Node, can see your IP address but has no idea what data you’re sending, and this goes through several middle nodes, until it reaches the Exit Node. The Exit Node can see what data you’re sending, but it can’t see your IP address so it doesn’t know WHO sent it. That’s why it’s a good idea to do nothing identifying when using the Tor Browser, like writing personal information. Here’s a blog post with more detailed information about the Tor Browser.
  • Get a VPN
  • VPNs are often used to get around government internet restrictions. Russia will probably not be able to do much about it. However, not all VPNs are created equal. Nearly all of the free VPNs are a scam that turn around and sell your data, so free VPNs are not secure. The only exception to this is ProtonVPN which has a free tier, but it’s very slow. Basically the only good VPN is one you pay for. When choosing a VPN, be aware of where the company is based, because if a VPN company is based in the USA, it will have to comply USA privacy laws. So choose a VPN based in a country that has good privacy laws. A great one is Mullvad VPN, which is based in Sweden. But for the purposes of Russia, just making sure your VPN is not Russian or in a country sympathetic to Russia is probably good enough.

Alternative Front-Ends A frontend is the the part of a website which the user interacts with directly. To browse the contents of websites, you usually have to visit them. However, many people have made alternative privacy-respecting frontends to popular websites that allow you to see the site’s content without actually visiting the website. This helps avoid tracking, data-collection, and even countries’ attempts to ban websites. Twitter is banned in Russia right now, but using all an alternative frontend to Twitter works (according to my Russian friend).

Google Translate

Imgur

Instagram

Medium

Reddit

TikTok

Twitter

Wikipedia

YouTube

YouTube Music

If anyone knows of one of these for Tumblr please let me know. I found this site called Tumgir but it looks sketchy and unlike the rest of the ones I listed, it’s not open-source. So visit with caution, but I’m mentioning it because it might be better than nothing.

There are also these browser extensions that automatically redirect site links to the available alternatives:

Mozilla Firefox

  • LibRedirect - Redirects YouTube, YT Music, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Imgur, Reddit, Wikipedia, Medium, etc.

Google Chrome

  • Privacy Redirect - Redirects Google Maps, Google Search, Instagram, Reddit, Twitter, Youtube.

iPhone (iOS 15+) Safari

  • Privacy Redirect - Twitter, Reddit, YouTube, Instagram, Google Translate, Google maps, Google Search, Medium

Android

  • UntrackMe - Google Maps, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube

Messaging / Communication

Matrix is a federated and decentralized End-to-End Encrypted (E2EE) messaging with many platforms, the most popular of which is Element. It’s like Discord, but worse. It’s getting better over time though! You can even use a a throwaway email to sign-up.

If you’re Russian you likely already know about Telegram, but MAKE SURE you’re aware that only Secret Chats are End-to-End Encrypted. So don’t say anything that would get you in trouble outside of a Secret Chat.

End Notes

China is way better at internet censorship. They’ve had years to build the infrastructure to control the flow of information online. And yet, the Chinese people still manage to “climb the wall” and find ways around this. Russia is new to this game and doesn’t have the resources China does. So I really doubt it’ll be that hard to get around their attempts to block websites. Have faith! And feel free to DM me for more info cause this post just scratches the surface for things you can do tbh.

I love an overprotective vampire threatening their charge/food source with the line “the sun will go down eventually!”.

Imagine your OTP

“Your last blood work said your sodium and potassium levels were a bit low…”

“STOP CALLING IT BLOOD WORK EVERYTIME YOU TAKE A NIP AT MY HANDS ON THE COUCH!”

my biology professor has such a chaotic energy about him, last week i went to his office hours and somehow we ended up on the topic of gay marriage:

he said that when he lived in texas they changed the law to define marriage as “between a man and a woman in a house of religious worship with the intention to have children” so he filed his taxes as single and when they called him up like “you filed married last year” he was like “you changed the law, i was married by a judge in a courthouse and i have no intention of having kids” and they told him “you know who that law was for” and i guess he hung up on them and did not, in fact, pay taxes as a married man that year

Chaotic good

NO! This is Lawful Good! He is following the LAW! Chaotic doesn't just mean cheeky!

Please tell me that I'm not the only one who will refuse to call facebook "meta".

I literally live in fandom spaces, if I search "meta" somewhere and facebook appears first I'm going to personally go kick zuckerberg's ass.

Okay okay but here's the thing.

MetaCompany put out a PUBLIC CEASE AND DESIST.

You mentioned being protective over certain other characters. Who was it that you were feeling a little bit more protective over in this process?

Kelly first, always. I am very protective over Alex and Kelly’s relationship as a couple. And then the fans that were going to watch the show. I didn’t want it to be like — our formula of all these shows is there’s a problem, we realize it, we kick some butt, we reflect on it, and then it’s solved. And that couldn’t exist. That was another thing, to your earlier question. This cannot have a resolve and it does truly go on through the whole season.

And then there were moments, some of it didn’t make it into the episode, but Nia was somebody that I was very protective over in her experience as well. I didn’t want to package her in a situation. She has a very nuanced experience that is very similar to Nicole and I’s close friendship. A lot of the stuff that went down for me regarding, you know, joining the show, with racism and different things in fandom — I leaned heavily on Nicole, because there’s a lot of things she just got more than anyone else based on her experience. And so that was important to me. So I tried to play on real life dynamics within ourselves in the story as well, which also made it very personal.

There was a piece that that didn’t make it, just because the episode ran really long, where when Kelly storms out, Nia is the one that’s like, ‘You guys. Of course, she feels this way. I have an idea of what that feels like.’

[…]

It’s never been a disconnect with (Kelly and Alex). And it was so important that it not be resolved. I think when I initially wanted to do it that way, I don’t know if everyone got it. And then when they saw the scene, I think they were like, ‘Okay, we have no resolve, but there’s beauty in the fact that there is no resolve,’ and they still have love for each other.

It’s a continuing conversation that they do have; it continues into the next episode. They tackle some big life stuff at the back half of the season, and if they hadn’t acknowledged the fact that they’re in an interracial relationship that would have felt like such a huge miss. If you’re going to commit to a life with someone, you have to acknowledge your similarities and your differences.

And I think that it’s similar to Chyler and I’s relationship of talking about different things within our industry, of being a black woman and things she will never understand and learning how to uncomfortably support me in that. And there were so many parallels within that. But what it does at the end of the day is it brings you closer together when you feel like someone has your back. So it really does add so much more depth, I think, to their relationship. And it’s not an easy fix. Like it’s a continual conversation that they have. But I even felt like, and I think Chyler would say the same thing, a shift in our dynamic post this episode.
