Okay, but if I'm thinking of the same article then their marriage is based on a strong care for each other, and a want to make that commitment "official", not just a sneaky attempt to get healthcare.

They consider themselves "each other's person" and are thinking about co-parenting at some point, it's all very sweet.

The joke's still funny, but it does diminish the importance of this relationship to these two women outside of just what the government gives them for it.
