Hello! I saw your Cohost post and was wondering if you know what their moderation and Trust & Safety team is like. I have seen a lot of people harass folks to no end on tumblr, for no apparent reason even with innocuous fics, with unfortunately no action on the tumblr staffs' part, and frankly I am terrified it will eventually happen to me. This would be the main reason, alongside the algorithm stuff, that I would move to it.

honestly like. your mileage is going to vary depending on any site. cohost has a fairly clearly-written Community Guidelines page that outlines most of the behavior that can and will be enforced to prevent harassment and abuse, and since the company that runs ASSC is much more worker-focused (e.g. not advertiser-focused) i personally have a much greater degree of trust in them than i do in twitter or tumblr. But look, like, that's just my opinion. Obviously, only time will tell how they react to things like that, but my guess based on the staff's behavior so far is that "i think they'll handle it in a good way".

FWIW the lack of algorithm also contributes positively to this, imo -- no "random posts" in your feeds means you have less exposure to users/posts that you have not personally opted in to see. that in itself GENERALLY dampens the effect of harassment campaigns.

that said, there's also a pretty hefty set of tools that you, the individual user, can use to protect yourself -- going private on a blog means ALL YOUR CONTENT (comments, posts, reblogs, everything) is hidden from non-followers. none of this "well if you left a comment on a post a while back it'll still show up" shit that happens on tumblr. so that's a good Nuclear Lockdown if you need it.

Cohost is so boring without people to follow so how do you find people to follow?

i follow a lot of people based on what other people i follow reblog. you can also search tags similar to the way tumblr has tag pages (e.g. #dogs or #coffee or whatever) and follow people that way. i've found a lot of people through that. you do have to do some more work on your end to get a lively home feed, but imo it's way more satisfying than just getting random posts blasted at you based on what a site "thinks you might like"

hi!! i think this is probably explained somewhere better but private accounts on cohost make your posts visible to selected followers only? or?

here is a good post that i did not personally write that explains a lot of those mechanics, but tl;dr: - individual blogs have their own privacy settings (only followers can view, only logged-in users can view, or fully public) - you can also set CW flags per post as you'd like, which hide the post until someone clicks through the CW beyond that it's pretty straightforward. there's tags and stuff. idk. it's fairly similar to tumblr

Hey, does Cohost offer blog transfer? Like, if I download the data for my account here, could I upload it there? Or is there an internal system like how Firefox supports transfers from Chrome?

Avatar

No. It's just a new website. There aren't transfer tools, either officially or unofficially, yet. There are plans for an open API, so theoretically it could be done in the future, I imagine. But I don't know for sure! I don't work there i just like the site lol

cohost dot org is a new website

cohost is a lot like tumblr. you can have a blog, you can reblog things.

cohost is also a lot NOT like tumblr. it's explicitly anti-algorithm, no ads, and extremely transparent.

it's made by some friends of mine, and right now it's invite-only, but you can also make an account and you're put into a queue that's activated as the site scales up. I think it's a really cool project and I'm going to be on there more and more, i think.

it's totally free, and the culture is still starting, but there is some real top-tier Posting going on. you can check out the cohost twitter account for more information, but i really think this is gonna Be Something.

if we're mutuals feel free to reach out for an invite code, i have a few more saved up. the site's good, i love it, and i'm way less worried about some of the dumb shit that circles around sites like tumblr or twitter. for one thing, they're actively doing all these things:

i trust these folks, and i think the site's good. i think more people should be on it, and if you're used to tumblr you'll probably like cohost.

reminder this is a thing, it's why i'm not on here much

hey the queue for new users on cohost is now empty which is to say that you can get in basically as soon as you sign up. anyway it's still good

hi i heard this site was dying again. have you heard of this site but better. well good luck out there

One thing I feel people miss about lord of the rings is that it’s sort of……….post-apocalyptic?

Like– the world already ended, a long time ago, and the characters are surrounded by the ruins of dead countries. They spend most of their time journeying through places that are either abandoned (Moria) soon to be abandoned (Rivendell/Lorien) or half-destroyed and falling into decay (Rohan/Gondor.) The villains are creatures that Used to be Human; I feel like Lotr’s orcs/ringwraiths have more in common with zombies than they do with DnD-style orcs, because they’re a state that “normal” people enter when they’re corrupted by a supernatural force.

Even the Shire is surrounded by ruins– the ruins of watchtowers, the ruins of the old Northern Kingdom, the ruined city near the Grey Havens. The people around there have an idiom “when the king comes back” that means the same thing as an idiom like “when pigs fly”–  “when a completely ridiculous improbable thing happens.” They’re so used to the disintegrated state of the world that the idea of a central government is fairy-tale-like and bizarre. They have their little mayors and thains; they don’t need anything else.

So yeah! I see people try to “modern-real-world- au” versions of Hobbiton by making it “a peaceful suburb” but to me, a modern au version of Hobbiton would be more like…….

You are a hobbit.

You don’t know much history, but you understand that there were Wars a long time ago that destroyed a great amount of life on earth.

You live in a little hole in the ground. You don’t know that long ago these holes used to be called “bunkers;” you decorate them with flowers.

When you want to say that something won’t happen, you’ll sarcastically say things “lol yeah SURE that will happen! And tomorrow pigs will fly, Parliament will come back into session, there will be a president in the White House, there will be a prime minister making speeches, and diplomats will intercede between all of them! ha! XD”

If you journey even a little outside of your home, you’ll find the ruins of old cities and skyscrapers. There are messages in the ruins that are written in languages you don’t speak. Human beings used to live here; they don’t anymore.

And you’re not supposed to leave the Shire because sometimes you’ll meet the things that used to be human, but aren’t anymore.

it’s kind of deeply depressing that there exists this entire vast subculture of progressive-learning 15-19 year olds online who are legitimately filled with anxiety over their media consumption diet and closely monitor themselves and others to make sure nothing they consume is Problematic™ lest they be ousted from their social circles. at the exact age where it’s actually good to have a varied media diet and be able to critically engage with harmful elements, too

straight up if you are high school or early university aged and you’re spending time feeling significant guilt and anxiety about what you choose to read or watch because of your online peers and shaping your media diet based on fear, you do not have to be around those peers anymore. there is a vast world outside this kind of person

Dont you run around writing “op is a terf” onto irrelevant posts on this website?

well you see, violent transphobia and uh, ‘liking steven universe or whatever’ are actually two very different things. one matters and affects real people in the real world and one doesn’t. hope this helps

okay yeah you reblog straight up blatant terf shit, including sharing posts that flat out say, verbatim, “trans activism is incompatible with feminism and women’s rights”. i wonder why you might have an interest in thinking that identifying and criticizing transphobic rhetoric is akin to creating a culture of fear over what media people choose to consume 🤔

cool that there’s a trans guy character in that new baymax series or whatever. idc it will never detract how funny it is to me that they thought a man saying “these are the type of pads i use for my period” wasn’t an obvious enough signifier of him being trans so they just. put him in a trans t shirt. like JUST. a tshirt. in case you missed that this is the trans character. this is the trans character guys. cant you tell by the Giant Trans Flag he’s wearing

like. isn’t this at least a little funny just on a conceptual level
