Obviously this has exploded in notes a wee bit. Leading to a lot of really strange misconceptions.
1. Scotland already has hate crime laws, like most laws they evolve over time.
For example, in the past few years, Scotland’s domestic violence laws were updated so that the psychological aspect of domestic abuse was defined and actionable. It also included reference to controlling behaviour like financial control.
Laws evolve, so people in the comments going ‘woah Scotland had no laws against hate crime’ aren’t correct. They are simply evolving to suit the time.
2. Hate speech does not equal free speech. You don’t have the right to stir up hatred against a group of people without any consequences.
