Guattari’s idea is both refreshing and profound. He suggests that when a person experiences psychosis, her psychosis changes according to her surroundings, and, therefore, treating her with fear by locking her up, keeping her in restraints, overmedicating her, and exposing her to other methods of suppression only serves to change her psychosis to a psychosis of fear and paranoia. Who, psychotic or not, in the same situation wouldn’t also feel terror and paranoia? Indeed, there is a legitimate reason to be paranoid and afraid. Further, the shock of being treated inhumanly, the sense of alienation and of betrayal, and, perhaps paramountly, the realization that humans can and do treat other humans in this way, is itself shocking and traumatizing. I remember seeing someone share this article when it came out with basically the same attitude as the author, and being horrified but not surprised reading through it. Descriptions of "dressing strangely" used as if they are supposed to scare and threaten the audience (which is the Seattle middle class, so, on target I suppose.) What got me most is the paranoid schizophrenic not getting better and refusing to take his meds...when someone paid by the fucking government is constantly showing up at his house trying to get him to take them.
It's called Assertive Community Treatment, or ACT nursing, and it's enough to get ANYONE in a tinfoil hat--psych nurses who's entire job is to track down, monitor, and push medication on impoverished and homeless people. When city governments talk about expanding mental health resources for the homeless, THIS is what they mean.

I've been working a job where I specifically teach reading on the page and reading comprehension for about seven years now. the kids (and sometimes adults) that I work with are mostly autistic and/or have learning/developmental/intellectual disabilities. they are not bad people for having low reading comprehension. in general, they're not even the people you're arguing with online! and if they are, it's generally not because of their low reading comprehension. like, if you genuinely think that a person has a problem with reading comprehension, maybe don't be an asshole about it. I - an autistic person who has always been good at reading - am not better than my students with low reading comprehension. you're not better than them, either. you're just finding a new way to call people the r-slur, and it's not cool.
