Pff. People tryin’ to tell me (on anon, so you KNOW how committed to their viewpoint they are) that Sun v Adam wouldn’t have narrative weight. That Sun’s position could be replaced by Blake or Yang or Ilia, in spite of him being the only one of that entire pool actually positive all the time and trying to be a force of good, without being hung up on anything else.
Lemme reiterate, Blake should have the finishing blow on Adam. That’s universal, obviously. But who can fight with her? Well, honestly Sun would be both justified and interesting. They don’t have prior beef but they are in every way opposite in their positioning to Blake. Both faunas who have formed a close bond with Blake, and whose outlook on life has shifted her perspective on how things can be. Adam representing her past, her fear, her anger and hate because he instilled all those things in her. Sun representing her future, her joy, her trust and her happiness because he’s instilled all that in her. Adam defines what a villain of a faunas can be, leading by brute force and killing intent to enforce his will and desires. Sun leads by charisma and positive focus, encouraging both his team and, as shown during the invasion, others around him to get things done. Adam is literally the strength of the one, and Sun the strength of the many. RT couldn’t have been much more symbolically explicit than having Blake holding up the flag of the true White Fang over Sun sitting on a couch smiling.
But, what about Yang? Or Ilia? Yang’s beef is strictly personal and ultimately comes down to her own trauma more than anything else. Yes she lost her arm trying to save Blake but Blake never showed up in Yang’s trauma as anything more than a reminder of how it started, and now as a reminder that someone else in her life has run off. If Yang’s getting blows in on Adam, that only has meaning behind it as a resolution to Yang’s trauma, nothing deeper. Plus, Yang’s entire arc through V4 to V5 now has been about letting go of past obsessions to focus on what matters in her life, particularly her family and team. Yang has far more narrative significance in her arc if she spends the final battle not taking on Adam for personal revenge, but helping Ruby and protecting her little sister from villains who want her dead instead. Also, y’know, not a faunas, and Blake just got through telling Menagerie Adam is a problem Faunas have to take care of, SOOOOO...
And Ilia? I love the gal but she is NOT ready to turn on Adam in any narrative sense. She literally only just got done not fighting FOR him, at best she represents that people can be forgiven and accepted back from Adam’s extreme side of things, not as the opposite side of Adam, not like Sun. Plus, going directly against Adam right now raises all the death flags of her being killed “as a traitor,” and we don’t want that.
Listen, you can beg and pray for a Yang/Blake tag team fight all you want and act like it’s justified, but in terms of narrative it just undercuts the story both of them are having told. Sun just works in a way no other character can because he has been integrated into Blake’s story from V1. Not as a character as fleshed out as I’d like, but at the least as a SYMBOL of everything good with Faunas and what Blake can strive for. Peace, positive thinking, and optimism.
