It's wonderful how, with no warning and without even trying, we will randomly stumble across new favorite songs, new favorite artists, new favorite books, new favorite movies, new favorite games, new favorite shows, new favorite snacks, new passions, new hobbies, new interests, new favorite blogs and new favorite people. So when things are terrible, hold onto the fact that someday, possibly when you least expect it, you'll suddenly come across something wonderful!
My wishes for the 2024 World Figure Skating Championships:
- German pair girl domination! (their partners can be there as well, I guess, but ... whatever)
- Shoma Uno to never retire ever
- My ice dance faves, Théo le Mercier and Loïcia Demougeot, to have a really nice week :)
- Roman Sadovsky to be Roman HAPPYovsky amirite
- Camden Pulkinen and Alex Johnson to hold hands and look deeply into each other's eyes
- For the impossible to happen and for me to care about the wominz event
- Kazuki Tomono to be there somehow idk
The character of Freddie Lounds always bugged me in the 2013 Hannibal series. I loved the book Freddy Lounds, because he was this self-hating National Enquirer type journalist and it made sense for the time and place. But then they reinvented the character as this ... blogger? Who somehow had the money to fly all over the country to investigate true crime? In the 2010s? What.
Except!
It's eerie how much that version of Freddie Lounds now makes sense in the 2020s. She's a TikTok true crime conspiracy theorist. Of course she is! And her rabid followers are throwing money at her to do "boots on the ground" investigations of cases, despite having no sense of integrity or idk ... shame.

Honestly, it's like picking up a book and saying "I know all these words, I can type, I could have written this" like there's no middle step between the technical ability and the finished work.

I finally watched I Have Nothing, which may have blipped on your radar if you're a figure skating fan. It's a Canadian documentary series about a comedian, Carolyn Taylor, who comes up with a concept for a "high level, gold medal" pairs routine set to I Have Nothing by Whitney Houston. Despite not being a skater, choreographer or dancer, Carolyn sets out to make her dream a reality ("buffoon makes good"), by putting on a show for thousands of people where David Pelletier and Ekaterina Gordeeva skate the routine she's choreographed.
It's a pretty funny concept, with a ton of cameos from All Your Faves. (Who's Carolyn's mentor? Of course it's Sandra Bezic! Who does the costuming? Of course it's Mathieu Caron! Who teaches Carolyn to skate? Of course it's Brian Orser!) And, honestly, worth a watch purely for how totally and completely baffled Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara are by what this strange Canadian lady wants from them.
But. But!
What I was not expecting was for this show to punch me in the face with how much I 'ship David Pelletier and Ekaterina Gordeeva.
Seeing her at the Calgary Olympics was what made him decide to become a pairs skater? (I feel like this needs fact checking, but I don't care.) They married other people and then came back together in their 40s? They'd been skating a show together, and then he put his arm around her to see if she had feelings for him and SHE TOUCHED HIM BACK?
He says something pretentious about love in French and she deadpan replies, je t'aime aussi?
Why am I not reading this figure skating romance novel RIGHT NOW? I am deceased.
