Ready Player One (Short Review)

As the credits rolled, mentally, I was making one of the biggest sighs of relief that I can recall when it came to whether or not a film would live up to my expectations. Ready Player One not only met my expectations, it exceeded them.

Let’s get this out of the way. This is not a two hour movie of "Remember the 80's? Remember this movie? Remember this game?"

Yes, it has the Iron Giant. Yes it has Tracer from Overwatch and Yes, it most certainly has Gundam (just to name a few). But that's just the cherry on top of this delicious hot fudge sundae of fun and Spielberg patented wonder.

From beginning to end, I was invested in the characters, rooting for them to collect the keys and find the Easter Egg to control the Oasis (the film's VR world) and it's thanks in large part to the excellent story, told in a way that only Spielberg could craft with such excellence in execution, supported by a wonderful cast and masterclass visual effects.

Simply put and forgive my French, Ready Player One is fucking awesome and saying anything else would just spoil the fun.

This is a battle scene from the first episode of an anime that just released yesterday called Re: Creators. This anime came out out of nowhere and is already one of my favorites of the season thus far. The concept is simple, instead of the trope of a protagonist going into a fantasy world ala Sword Art Online, Manga/Anime characters enter ours and the protagonist is caught in the crossfire. With the story by the creator of Black Lagoon, the direction done by the director of Fate/Zero and the music done by Sawano (Attack on Titan/Kill la Kill). I implore you, to please check this show out.

So firstly, before I get into my thoughts on this absolutely wonderful trailer, I need to lay my cards on the table.

I’ve never cared for the Zelda series. I’ve never been a fan, it was just never a franchise that appealed to me.

Until Breath of the Wild was first announced. The idea of the franchise stepping towards a Skyrim-like concept of an open world for you to fully explore and to do whatever has intrigued me from the very beginning.

All this build up lead to this trailer right here. This trailer is flawless. The presentation, the music, the art style, the fact there’s FINALLY voice acting that conveys more emotion than any game I’ve played in the past year.

There’s giant monsters that shoot laser beams of death, the ability to tame wild horses, a loot system where enemies can drop better weapons and gear, hunting, dungeons and even a Matrix bullet time effect where you can snipe enemies like a badass in mid-air.

If you haven’t already guessed, I’ve pre-ordered this already, you should too.

Let’s face it, I’ve been completely obsessed with the Nintendo Switch since both the presentation and the Treehouse event and I’ve spent a majority of my time reading anything I can find on it. Impressions, videos, you name it, I’ve most likely read it.

I feel like a crazy person, a person craving more information, more game announcements, more... well, everything related to this console.

I haven’t felt this way about a console for the longest time. March 3rd can’t come soon enough.

Kiznaiver Intro Taken Down

And of course the only video I could find of the Kiznaiver intro without any pitch change or A-ha dub-in was taken down. Thanks Japan.
