So, if you haven't already heard about it, this 19-year old girl in Arlington has been arrested and awaits trial for up-to one year in prison for video taping 20-seconds of the Transformers movie. You can read the whole thing here.
Was this smart? No. Was it "stealing"? Well, technically, yes. But was the theaters manager's reaction necessary? No. With her 20-second clip can she reasonably be expected to either: A. Profit, or B. Prevent the theater or studio from continuing to sell tickets? No.
This is low-hanging fruit. It is too difficult for the theater association or MPAA to go after the real pirates in China and elsewhere around the world so they go after what is essentially an easy win, but ultimately a non-starter in the "war on piracy" because prosecuting this girl for a 20-second clip of a relatively crappy movie when there was no intent to sell or otherwise disrupt the theaters profit-making ability is not going to advance their effort. This is like the adult that beats kids because it is easier than beating up other adults with relatively little chance that the kid can fight back.
