St. Patricks Day performed as you have never seen it before… What causes the variations in these supposedly “traditional” sets?

She’s actually doing the St.Patricks Day as her non-trad set.I believe that all of the traditional set tunes are allowed to be used as non-traditional sets in the third round. King of the Fairies was actually one of the most common non-traditional sets in my area until grades dancers started doing it as a trad. set.

Some of the traditional set dances also have more than the one step+ one set that we do in competitions. You can find a second step to the St.Patrick’s Day on youtube that is danced after the set.

This is the Molyneaux version…yes, folks can do the tune as a non-trad (contemporary) set, but this is not that. There are a few varieties of the traditional sets that are acceptable but I think this is the most noticeably different “version” out there. There are Molyneaux versions of other trad sets as well. They’re not super popular in competition and there are even different “interpretations” of those versions as well, but they are done and are still traditional. What causes the variations? It’s not been standardized…think of playing telephone but with Irish dance steps. As they get passed on, people have preferences, interpretations, etc….regional differences, who your teacher was - all that can contribute to them being danced differently. @ghillielove @bunnyofgrace
