Bottlenose dolphin, Alia (10 years old), died on May 22, 2018 at Dolphinaris Arizona. Alia was born at SeaWorld Orlando in December 2007. She had lived at Discovery Cove and Six Flags Discovery Kingdom prior to Dolphinaris. "According to a release from the company, the 10-year-old female bottlenose dolphin, named Alia, died early Tuesday morning. Dolphinaris said the cause of death is not known at this time, and will be determined by a necropsy. "Alia had displayed some unusual behaviors in last few days and she was being monitored," the company said. "She was under continual care by Dolphinaris staff and veterinarians." Dolphinaris said she was "with her dolphin companions and her caretakers when she died." We are just 8 days away from our Empty the Tanks protest in front of the Mirage Hotel and Casino. Temperatures are going to be soaring into the 100s this upcoming week. I ask that you please think about the dolphins trapped in the desert without any shade these next few days. A big portion of our campaign is asking for MGM to provide the shade that the Animal Welfare Act regulations state should be there. Jim Murren promised Ric O'Barry in the beginning of October 2014 that there would be shade provided in the next year. We are now in the summer of 2018. The only shade added has been for the benefit of the "trainers" who stand outside in the sun with the animals all day. These trainers have been caught on our recording saying they do not believe that the animals are in any danger from the sun. The only shade currently comes from the small trees planted around the edges which cover the pool briefly in the early morning or late evening. During the extreme UV hours of 11am-5pm, there is hardly any shade. Animal Welfare Act regulations state under 9CFR Section 3.103(b) Facilities, Outdoor, Shelter: Natural or artificial shelter which is appropriate for the species concerned, when local climatic conditions are taken into consideration, shall be provided for all marine mammals kept outdoors to afford them protection from the weather or from direct sunlight. "Listless, stressful, and unhappy lives followed by an early death are the norm rather than the exception for these poor animals confined to the cramped space of the Mirage's Death Pools that are otherwise so well known for their playfulness and happy, outgoing nature in the wild.
