You know, I don’t think I’ll ever really get over the idea of the murder of Fred Hampton; this incredible, handsome, effortlessly charming young man who inspired countless people to unite and take, head-on, their oppressors and abusers. He inspired the hope for real social change, and the end of hundreds of years of disgusting, racist rule by white America.
And the FBI were so shocked and horrified by the unifying and revolutionary message of this 21-year-old man, as was the theme of their grotesque workings at the time (as, I guess it is now), that they broke into his home, in the middle of the night, and pumped his sleeping body with bullets.
He was betrayed by a ‘friend’ who spiked his drink and led the FBI to him. He was betrayed by the US (though, of course, he couldn’t really have hoped for any more). The racist, imperialist, murderous government and its institutions snuffed out one of the brightest lights the world has ever seen.
On this day, 45 years ago, he was silenced as he lay in a sedative-induced sleep. Murdered, in the coldest of blood, by the fascist FBI.
