What can I say, I fall a lot.
This was a gift for one of my favorite artists, Greg Ruth. I got the chance to meet him when I went out to NY for MOCCAfest. Not only is he an amazing artist, but a tremendously nice guy - an inspiration. He likes squirrels - not to an unnatural degree or anything (I don't think), but I ran with it for the sculpture...
HAGFISH: AN ORIGIN STORY
She was the most beautiful woman in the world. Her beauty allowed for all of her desires – mental, emotional and physical, to be fulfilled. If she wanted it, it became hers without strife or anguish. There was one thing, however, that she could not attain. Her desire surpassed the human realm, for the only thing left for her to want was immortality.
She went to the shore and called to the Viking Spirit. At first she prayed, and then she begged. And for the very first time a tear rolled down her supple cheek, and it fell into the ocean. The Viking Spirit heard the tear as it dropped into the crashing waves, and went to see what could make such a pretty girl cry. But when she asked for eternal life, the God was rather put-off. Yet, he agreed to let her live forever, as long as she sacrifice her beauty. She accepted. And rather than being turned to an ugly hag of a woman, as she expected, she was turned into the most disgusting creature that ever was or will be. If another human ever attempts contact, she gets snotty all over. And so the hagfish has lived for centuries – snotty and squirming and disgusting, yearning for it’s beauty of the past. THE END!

Quite a coincidence yesterday - My roomate asked me how I felt about him getting a dog (basically - fuck no), I sculpted this fox (a dog-like creature), and my childhood dog died - all within a single hour. No pity or sadness please, just revel in the coincidence with me - and enjoy this sculpture.
The Unraveling Traveling "Never Books" are finished!
(No bluffing - they literally unravel, and are a fit size for traveling.)
I made them to sell at MOCCAfest the first weekend of April in New York. I made 12; each one is hand-bound with love, glue, fabric, and probably a little bit of my hair (though not on purpose - book binding can be a messy process). Each book contains 2 images of each sculpture created for the "Neverland Portraits" series, along with 5 original silly poems, and my favorite passages of J.M. Barrie's "Peter and Wendy" (that I felt were applicable).
The story is so much more fantastic and weird than the tired, played out interpretations would have you believe - SO much vivid imagery to work with! This is the last of me working with this story for a good while, but I might find my way back to it down the line... It created quite a few scenes and beasts in my mind that have not yet had a chance to escape.
