Social media bro is all of sudden an employer healthcare expert. The following was forwarded my way to “deal with”… I’ve been told to figure out the vending machine thing…which has nothing to with my actual role.

Sure, sugar is bad if it’s a large part of your daily diet. Last time I checked dictating employees’ food choices isn’t really a thing.  Also, keeping 35K+ employees healthcare cost in check has little to do micro-managing vending machine beverage selections. I rarely see them being used BTW. OH and any funds generated go towards the Employee Relief Fund. Umm, yeah oncology, specialty drugs and substance abuse treatment is where most of claims cost come for most all employers.  For the record, it is called the personal health assessment, we don’t have branded Coke machines, he used the incorrect form of “its” and why are you bothering the executive team with this? That last line. I just cannot.

“Hi [redacted],

My name is [redacted],and I work on the social media team here.

I’ve seen you speak a couple times at meetings and glad you’re here supporting our HR efforts.

In reading through the healthcare personal assessment on [redacted],I didn’t see anything mentioned about sugar consumption.

As you know, sugar is arguably one of the worst things for the human body can consume and leads to a large amount of health problems.

Sugar, not fat, is the deadly villain in the obesity epidemic.  As a company, if we’re looking to control healthcare costs, we should look no further than sugar consumption.

Here’s a link to an amazing talk called “the bitter truth”.  It’s both insightful and terrifying regarding sugar.

On a related topic, I think we should take a hard look at Coke machines in our buildings.

Are we enabling employees and hurting their health by offering easy access to sugar?

As a company, I believe we could be an dynamic corporate leader by bringing the realities of sugar consumption and it’s debilitating effects to our employees.

Thank you for your time.

Best,
