The stereotypes surrounding people who work with dead animals (and honestly death work in general) really disgusts me sometimes. Like taxidermists and morticians are some of the nicest and most empathetic people you’ll ever meet and it hurts me a lot that there’s people out there who will talk so much shit without understanding the emotional toil the job has on you sometimes.
It’s insulting that people will make “don’t go killing any animals” jokes in my family or when I get messages like “how can you claim to love animals when you skin them?”. Like on top of the emotional strain of actually doing the work, I also have to deal with people being fucking cruel and shitty to me? Fantastic.
Sometimes I get so emotional over the animals I work on. I have days I just can’t work because I don’t have mental fortitude to deal with certain processes, visuals, smells, etc. A lot of the time I have Lobo with me, especially when I’m working on people’s pets. It’s the “this person loved this little guy as much as I love you” that gets me through those situations.
Just knowing how much I care about my work and how much my family cares about running the funeral home, I can’t believe how quick people are to jump to insane assumptions, ESPECIALLY since you’re going to need at least one of these services :/
