As soo as you step into the hall of artist João’s apt. in Brazil, you know it’s something special. He has named it the “portal of good energies.”

His favorite subjects to paint are large colorful snakes with big eyes. (The walls in the hall are one long snake on each.)

I’ve noticed that in lots of Brazilian apts. people put hammocks across the glass doors to their terraces, which is a lovely idea. 

He painted suns around the lights on the ceiling. 

Look at the vibrant eating space.  João says that his previous apt. was much different. He moved into this one at the start of the pandemic and began to paint it. 

His bed has a painted sun for a headboard.

He uses green tape to display his smaller paintings on the closet doors.

His own, bold art makes his white apt. so much more livelier. 

A small nook is his studio.

#god MAN frickin gosh DARn i love this art so much.#it's like. there's something beautifully raw about it#the way their faces are turned away from the viewer but tucked in towards each other#as if there's too much there to be said#but their hands speak so much; essek's hand clenched in caleb's cloak; caleb daring to reach for essek's face but not touching#there's something almost architectural about the way they're leaned into each other#two collapsed buildings leaning on each other#an arch with its keystone pulled out yet still standing#critical role

Gotta love how, while Caleb and Essek are excellent mirrors and foils, they’re quite different in their similarities.

They’re both very high risk high reward type of people, but go about it in different ways. Essek is a planner. He acts from the safety of Rosohna, plays chess with entire nations and peoples as collateral. He thrives when in control, or under the illusion of control.

But when placed in the heat of the moment, facing the unexpected, he flails. When encountering the Nein while disguised he can't lie for shit. When hearing abut Lucien and DeRogna he damn near has a panic attack and treats it with whiskey cocoa. When cornered by a yeti he raises his tiny wizard fists. He's visibly rattled when teleporting the Nein to face a dragon, even when he is nowhere near having to face it himself.

Caleb, meanwhile, has had to learn to think quick. Start a fight. Throw a fireball. Make a blood pact at the bottom of the sea. Pull out a stolen relic in the court of an enemy nation and wave it about. Full on cast teleport to cross a battlefield. Oops now he’s a sheep. Oh well.

He has a handful of panicky moments himself early campaign, but the longer things go on, the more calm and comfortable he gets with making absolutely batshit desicions with very little time to consider the consequences. And, notably, Essek quickly seems to be developing in the same direction. He broke time and space with a new and untested spell to give his friends a nap. As an adventurer he can no longer afford to be calculating in the way he used to be. However, I imagine there will be a bit of a learning curve. Question is, how many near heart attacks does Essek have in Eiselcross as Caleb wanders into danger with nary a thought time and again?

#i do love this about them #also seems necessary for essek to figure out some new tricks because the kind of planning he does #sort of relies on him having access to resources + power + reputation — all of which are unreliable if he gets exposed as a traitor #and i think Caleb might chafe a bit in the opposite direction post-canon now that he's chained to the slow wheels of bureaucracy #aka Essek's favored terrain

#critical role#meta#YEAH!!!#i find it fascinating that their preferred methods of action speak so much to their social background#in terms of resources and avenues of power available to them#and also in terms of time scale??#like#kryn nobility must be setting up plots and plans that span several lifetimes#and weighing implications of actions across lifetimes#& essek's entire beacon-stealing plan might be extremely brash given that context#but he still leans towards this indirect and risk-mitigating style of taking action#until he's with the m9;#i don't know where i'm going with this#but it's something along the lines of feeling emotional about essek adopting this different sense of time#both out of necessity and for the people that he wants to spend time with

You cannot overstate how much that was the beginning and end of the plan. The all-powerful space emperor asked if she had co-conspirators waiting to take control, or if this obviously doomed assasination attempt was actually an intricate plan to politically undermine her. And Breq said actually I just thought I’d shoot you with this gun.
