Taylor finally contributing to the “murdering my husband” side of country music
imagine cheating on ur wife and then getting fucking murdered by taylor swift LMAO
big machine in 2014: PLEASE just put even ONE country song on 1989
taylor: absolutely not
taylor in 2020: here are two country songs just for the fuck of it
illicit affairs + rain ~ taylor swift
taylor song moodboards // betty
“would you kiss me on the porch
in front of all your stupid friends?”
the best part about concerts is that they’re always slightly shit. i love that i am at my very happiest after being shoved for 2 hours, with aching feet, ringing ears, and a dizzy head. it’s such a weird buzz or pure, overwhelming joy
here me out: taylor saying “so go ahead and light me up” in idsb has the same energy as “and then it was bought by me” in tlgad
Added another baby to our family 💗🤪
Please picture me
in the weeds
illicit affairs + rain ~ taylor swift
we stopped saying ts8 at midnight and this is how we are repaid
y’all. i don’t know how to say this eloquently but “my tears ricochet” is literally about her killing off her old self. there is absolutely no doubt in my mind. in reputation when she said “the old taylor can’t come to the phone right now. why? oh cause she’s dead” and we were so high off that act of self sacrifice for a fresh start we completely looked over the fact of what that must of done to her. in “my tears ricochet” we see her mourning herself and the life she built only to realize she grew past the sun. like i don’t think i’ll ever get over the imagery of her laying herself to sleep in order to become who she is today. like. it’s literally a song about saying goodbye to your past self. idk if i could say it any other way.
cardigan, august, and betty are all the same story told from different points of view, the narrator from betty had a thing with betty, but broke her heart, and then to forget about it she had a summer fling with the narrator from august, but all that taught her was that she misses betty so she broke that off and showed up at betty’s party to apologise and ask for forgiveness
okay here’s the full breakdown
(for reference, i’m going to call the narrator from ‘betty’ jamie, because i think it’s cute)
‘cardigan’ is from betty’s perspective, it details her thoughts after the relationship fell apart, reminiscing on the good times, lamenting the heartache of it ending. there’s the recurring motif of the cardigan, of course, but also “high heels on cobblestones” draws a direct link to “i was walking home on broken cobblestones”, which is a lyric from ‘betty’. she also says “choose two girls, lose the one” which is a reference to the love triangle, and how jamie went after another girl. i think “peter losing wendy” is a nod to how betty wanted a mature relationship and jamie couldn’t handle it at the moment, peter lost wendy because wendy grew up and he didn’t. also, betty says “i knew you’d miss me once the thrill expired, and you’d be standing in my front porch light”, she knew jamie’s summer fling with unnamed girl would be just that, a summer fling, and she knew that jamie would come back to her.
‘august’ is from unnamed girl’s perspective, the summer fling. first of all, august is a summer month, so it’s safe to assume everything in this song happened in august, during summer. “it was never mine”, “you were never mine” and “you weren’t mine to lose” are nods to how unnamed girl knew that jamie would always go back to betty, that this summer fling wouldn’t last. “remember when i pulled up, said ‘get in the car’” links directly to “she said ‘james, get in, let’s drive’” from ‘betty’. honestly i feel bad for this girl, she obviously really likes jamie, but it’s never going to work out, sorry dude.
‘betty’ is from jamie’s perspective. “would you trust me if i told you it was just a summer thing?” is a reference to the fling with unnamed girl, the one that jamie regrets. here’s what i think the full story is. jamie and betty had a thing at the end of a school year, betty wanted something real, jamie was afraid, wasn’t ready, couldn’t believe that someone like betty could love her, so she pushed betty away, doesn’t show up to the dance even though she probably promised to be there. (“betty, i know where it all went wrong, your favourite song was playing, from the far side of the gym, i was nowhere to be found”), then she immediately regretted breaking the promise and rushed there, but when she showed up she saw betty dancing with some guy (“plus, i saw you dance with him”) and it hurt, then she got angry, so she left the dance and “[walked home] on broken cobblestones” and this is when unnamed girl showed up and they went for a drive. it became a summer fling thing, but the whole time jamie was just thinking about how much she missed betty. so at the end of summer, jamie breaks it off with unnamed girl, shows up at betty’s end-of-summer party to apologise.
anyway, taylor swift said fuck, and also gay rights, stream folklore
I’m having a break down over The Last Great American Dynasty!!! Taylor tells the story of Rebekah Harkness and all the trouble she caused in Watch Hill Rhode Island with her insane parties, feuds with neighbors and her general debauchery that was the talk of the town. And then she died and Holiday House sat quietly for 50 years, “free of women with madness, their men and bad habits” AND THEN Taylor has the audacity to say “And then it was bought by me // I had a marvelous time ruining everything” because Taylor was know for her crazy parties there and her “men and bad habits” and we know there were tabloids publishing stories of her fighting with people in town. I REALLY underestimated this song upon first listen. Holy SHIT.
