Hank Bieber and Ian Boltz entered the studio for some recording time with little more than some mutual music interests and some lyrics in a notebook. What came out of that studio session is now the indie acoustic outfit Beauty Minus Beast. Hank himself says that he...

"Beauty Minus Beast" Album Review
With the South Loop croon, it’s Hank Bieber. Beauty Minus Beast is where lounge music meets indie rock, a curious and perhaps as-yet unexplored intersection in the modern game. “I keep joking that I wanted to name the style ‘elevator rock',” Hank said of the record. But somewhere between the tambourine, the boy-girl harmonies, and the airy saxophone solos, we are met with exciting tales told from a curiously authoritative point of view in the corner of the room.
Once we’re washed back adrift by “The Idea of 2,” the gentle banjo and guitar sounds carry us away in the current. "Beauty Minus Beast" is a diverse effort that begs simultaneously for early Matt Berninger chamber rock and bold Bossa Nova flair. It dabbles in surf pop, free jazz, Americana, and of course the sad-boy tradition of acoustic rock. The record features a seemingly endless list of collaborators from nearly every musical background, from a pair of suburban two-tone ska veterans, to a hardcore punk guitarist, and a platoon of acoustic stool acts. After contributions from seemingly every chapter of the modern American songbook, the story is still told with promise by its orator: “Pick your favorite poison and I’ll choose mine, too,” Hank asks.
