DEAR PARENTS AND PARENTS TO BE:

I want to warn you all against falling into this same horrible trap that I did. A couple of months ago, my one year old son got a really nasty cold. His pediatrician recommended we give him some Benadryl to help with some of his symptoms and to help him rest at night which would be good for his immune system. So we did, and it did seem to help him. The cold was a bad one, as I said, and it lasted about two weeks. At that point, giving him the medicine had become part of his bedtime routine. He loved the taste of it and would even reach for the bottle and ask for it if he saw it. He was sleeping better. He had never been a good sleeper. Both his father and I take medicine to help us sleep, as we have issues. I have trouble getting to sleep and his dad has trouble staying asleep. Our son seems to have both, but that could also be due to the fact that he is a toddler.

Anyway, we were giving him this medicine every night to help him sleep and one day it just hit me. I said to him “Okay come get your medicine!” And I thought to myself…“I’m giving my kid medicine, and he’s not even sick. He’s a perfectly healthy and normal child, and I’m giving him medicine. Wtf am I doing????” So I had a discussion with my husband and we agreed that we needed to stop. I told him I felt like we were setting him up for failure. How was he ever going to learn to sleep on his own if he always has medicine to help him? He agreed.

If you think children can’t become dependent on a simple drug like Benadryl, let me tell you how wrong you are. I just spent two hours trying to get my son to sleep without it, all while he screamed and cried and thrashed around. He screamed and cried himself to sleep in my arms, after exhausting himself for all that time. It was heart-wrenching to see my child going through that, knowing that it was my fault and it could have been prevented. I did that to him. And he’s probably going to have to go through that a few more nights as he gets used to falling asleep without Benadryl again. So parents out there, learn from my mistake. Don’t use Benadryl to force your kids to sleep every night. Only use it as intended. Please. :/

Woah.. wtf.. being a first time mum has zero to do with anything, and you should of known better from beig an addict yourself. Why would you give a child medicine if they are not sick? Why would you even continue to give it to them for that long? Youre saying you only gave the correct dosage, but you obviously didnt because it literally says on the bottle/packaging not to exceed a certain amount of time and to see a doctor if symptoms persist.. wtaf am i even reading?

This pissed me off… How did you not realise…. It makes no sense.

Exactly? Wtf. Like, i could maybe understand a week or two.. two fucking months??? You gave a healthy child unneeded drugs for 8 fucking weeks? Are you shitting me????

Yeah exactly!!! ‘I warn you all against falling into the trap I did’ what trap?? You gave your kid medicine for weeks for nothing without thinking about it even once? Hmm….

Okay I have to agree with y'all. Idk how this is a trap or pattern that anyone would just fall into. Most people just stop giving their baby medicine when they aren’t sick anymore… Ramona is 2.5 and never even had Benadryl. I feel really bad for the baby because now they are forced to deal with side effects that wouldn’t have even happened if their parents just used the medicine as directed?

Being a first time Mom has nothing to do with this. Don't make excuses for yourself, this is fucked up.

You don’t tell people you’re not okay,“ she said, “because it’s hard watching them not know what to do. “Then you end up comforting them, even though the one who needed comforting was you.

Teach children that this is not ok

Teach children that there’s nothing wrong with this

I’m really not understanding why you think cultural appropriation would be ok, unless you are assuming that the girl in the picture is part Japanese.

Yellow face yet she’s using white makeup in the traditional style but okay.

Cultural appropriation isn’t a thing, hon. ☺️ Cultures should be shared by all means.

I disagree. The makeup is clearly reflective of traditional Geisha makeup which is yellowface and therefore racist. Furthermore, the girl is wearing a kimono, a garment that has for ages carried cultural significance. Assuming that she is white how can you think this is ok? And cultural appropriation isn’t a thing? What rock do you live under? I suggest you educate yourself on the differences between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation.

I am japanese, in japan at this very moment. The only people who think culture shouldnt be shared are racists like you.

A vast majority of Japanese people actually enjoy other people making an effort to spread and enjoy japanese culture, and encourage it. Many make businesses in deliberately taking pictures of people in kimono. A common omiage (gift) for foreigners from japanese people is traditional japanese things such as kimonos, tea seats, shisa dog statues, ect.

And to top it off, basically 80 percent of japanese customs, traditions, and food, came from other countries. Japanese is an integration of different cultures, like america. Japan takes influences from places like korea, china, russia, and europe. If japan stuck to itself, there would be no tempura, japanese tea, tea ceremonies, kabuki, japanese bread, japanese curry, j- pop, anime, cars, or modern fishing techniques. The picture is not “yellow face” they are not making fun of asians. In fact, it looks like they put extra care and research into their work.

The only reason that you have a problem with this is because that little girl is white and you know that it is acceptable on tumblr to crap all over white people. The only racist here is you.

When I was little, I desperately wanted my hair in braids, the way that my black friend had them, with fun barrettes, etc. I wanted them because to me, they were so absolutely adorable and I wanted to be pretty like her and I was completely jealous of all black girls’ hair. I was told “no, only black girls can have their hair like that. You need to pick a white girl hairstyle to get.” And was told “blacks are going to be mad if they see you with their hair.” I was absolutely crushed. What I’m saying is - little kids aren’t setting out to mock a culture. They don’t want to rock cornrows and be “edgy” or anything else. They just think it’s cute and fun and wow - they may actually learn about a culture in the process. Stop shitting on the imaginations of children and let them explore the beautiful cultures that surround us for fucks sake.

  • depression does not vanish just because your life is technically ‘going well’
  • depression does not vanish just because good things are happening to/around you
  • depression does not vanish just because you’re surrounded by people who love you
  • depression is an unconditional illness that comes and goes as it pleases, regardless of what might be happening in your life

“Cloud Tsunami” Over Sydney

A bizarre meteorological event hit the coast of New South Wales, Australia over the weekend. Dubbed a “cloud tsunami” on Twitter, this massive wave in the sky measured several kilometers long and swept over the city of Sydney, bringing with it powerful thunderstorms, heavy rains, and forceful winds that required the Australian Bureau of Meteorology to issue a warning for the surrounding area.

The massive formation is actually called a shelf cloud, composed of arcus clouds. The shelf cloud is typically the leading edge of a thunderstorm, attached to the base of the parent cloud that contains the storm. The strange wave-like appearance is caused by the cool sinking air from the storm’s downdraft spreading out over the land, meeting the warm air being drawn into the storm’s updraft. (Source)

I get sick of tumblr’s version of self care, which 90% of the time threads into this beautifully: go pet a fuzzy cute animal! pile up your favorite blankets from childhood and watch disney movies! take a nap! play a game from this list of cute soothings games!

More realistically: go take a shower because it’s been three days. Wash the dishes that have been in the sink since last Friday that you can smell as soon as you open your door because rotting food stinks. Pick all your clothes off the floor because that’s where your entire wardrobe is and you’ve already cried today because you tripped over a sweater and realized the cat puked on it. Call someone who can give you enough courage to pay that bill you’ve been ignoring. Put away the crackers because that’s all you’ve eaten for two days straight. Apologize to the friends who are worried sick about you, and if you can’t at least let them know you are ok and need space.

One of the most empowering types of self-care is responsibility, but tumblr just wants to sit in a closet strung with fairy lights and read their favorite fic.

“Cute” self-care for “cute” mental issues. That’s not reality.

Aria had gone 7 days seizure free, with the side effects of her medications all the more prevalent.

This video is from 10 minutes ago, when Aria had a 30 second seizure in her sleep.

Before I began recording, Aria sat up abruptly, eyes wide and twitching, then collapsed back down to where you see her in this video. Her eyelids are half open, and her eyes are moving back and forth rapidly. Her hands and feet were also twitching. At the end of the video you can see the left side of her face twitch, which then (not shown) progressed to a couple head twitches to the right.

Please help Aria find seizure relief!

Without the help of insurance, we can use all the help we can get to give Aria seizure relief, without the nasty side effects of pharmaceuticals!

It’s strange how your childhood sort of feels like forever. Then suddenly you’re sixteen and the world becomes an hourglass and you’re watching the sand pile up at the wrong end. And you’re thinking of how when you were just a kid, your heartbeat was like a kick drum at a rock show, and now it’s just a time bomb ticking out. And it’s sad. And you want to forget about dying. But mostly you just want to forget about saying goodbye.

“There is a fundamental reason why we look at the sky with wonder and longing—for the same reason that we stand, hour after hour, gazing at the distant swell of the open ocean. There is something like an ancient wisdom, encoded and tucked away in our DNA, that knows its point of origin as surely as a salmon knows its creek. Intellectually, we may not want to return there, but the genes know, and long for their origins—their home in the salty depths. But if the seas are our immediate source, the penultimate source is certainly the heavens… The spectacular truth is—and this is something that your DNA has known all along—the very atoms of your body—the iron, calcium, phosphorus, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and on and on—were initially forged in long-dead stars. This is why, when you stand outside under a moonless, country sky, you feel some ineffable tugging at your innards. We are star stuff. Keep looking up.”
