He hated himself for those weeks, or was it months - everything was a drunken blur from that time and his actions still had consequences and despite being drunk he knew what he was doing. What he was ruining and who he was hurting. They weren’t perfect, both of them had their flaws but he found it much easier to look past hers than his own.
He didn’t even like her saying Ima even though it wasn’t Imas fault at all, she didn’t know what she was getting into and Jimmy owed her an apology as well in all honesty. He used her and he hated that. He hated a lot of things he did when it came down to it, the anger, the drinking. Maggie really was one of the best things to come around here and to happen to him.
His brows pressed together as she spoke though, he didn’t know any of this about here and it made her realize how much he maybe didn’t know about her. His fingers dug in a little more when she said the word mistake. He could never see her as that, he looked down at their hands when she reached for it and his initial instinct was to pull away but he let her continue, with a soft breath in through his nose, watching her with such caution, having a lot of thoughts going through his own head but afraid if he interrupted shed stop and he didn’t want that. His eyes on hers, every bit of his attention was hers. While he heard that the marriage thing was important he thought more or less to her mother not so much her. His eyes wide, he never thought of marriage, not for himself and not because he didn’t want it but never saw it happening. He couldn’t even wear a ring…
“M-married?” He swallowed hard, part of him wanting to agree just to get some release but that would be using her and this was a bit deal, “You, wait…” He shook his head with a soft laugh, more nervous than anything. “Thats, wow, a lot… I mean, i don’t wanna try and change your mind, i just, its not like that. Their thinking and yours. You don’t fall under their laws anymore, hell, living here we barely have laws. W-what else? Sex couldn’t of been the only rule, what else wasn’t allowed. Baby steps.” He smiled at her, he wasn’t going to pressure her into something she didn’t want yet and despite her wanting him he got the feeling she just wasn’t ready and needed some help letting go of what was burned into her ‘how to’. He deserved the celibacy punishment after what he did, how he didn’t even stop when she caught them… He could wait a little longer. He just wasn’t ready for marriage yet and he wasn’t going o marry her to live in the camp still, he wanted a home, their own, a family even.
{ ℳ. ℰ. ✾ } ———— It was the same for her. Maggie found it so much harder to forgive herself than it was to forgive Jimmy. Forgiving him came naturally. He was the man she loved and he always would be. His actions didn't almost get an innocent group of people murdered. The fact that he forgave her wasn't enough for her - it was a comfort but never enough. The most she could hope for was that her forgiveness of him offered him at least that.
Ima wasn't a bad girl. She was just caught in the middle of it all. The bigger girl seemed happier now. She'd caught the eye of another troupe member and she'd moved on. Maggie had her Jimmy again so it all seemed to work out. The little fortune-teller might not ever truly like Ima but she didn't wish her any ill will. If Jimmy did apologize to her that was up to him. She'd never say any more about that situation. She didn't even like to think about it.
Maggie could see how her story affected him. Saddened him. She could see it in his eyes and that broke her heart. There was so much more to the little blonde's tragic past that she kept locked away. She didn't want to tell Jimmy things that would make him unnecessarily unhappy. It's not like he could change them so why should he have to hear about them and be hurt by them? Maybe one day she'd open up more if she felt it was truly needed - for now, she'd just give him the basics so he could at least understand her a bit more.
She could see him bulk at the idea of marriage and that made her feel bad. It was a big thing and she didn't want him to feel she was trying to trap him. What more could he give her than his all? He'd stopped going to the housewives where he was making an extra income. He'd stopped visiting that tent where sexual things happened. His body was hers as much as his heart. Maggie appreciated that.
"Yes. I...I know it's a lot." She looked down at their interlocked fingers. Her's wrapped tightly around a fused set on each of his hands. Unlike anyone else when she looked at that sight she saw nothing but love and beauty. "So many things, Jimmy...we'd be here all afternoon discussing all the things I was raised to believe were a sin. All the rules that weren’t supposed to broken." She leaned in to brush her lips over his. "I don't want that. You don't want that...let's focus on us." Everything was a sin. Even just laying in bed beside him at night. Anything that was supposed to feel good and be natural at least.
She wasn't ready to have sex with him. At least not all the way. But she wanted to give him something. Maggie would push aside how anything they did on a sexual level was a sin. She'd have to. If she was able to touch herself between the legs she was already a sinner - why not at least touch him too? Slowly she let go of his hands to bring them to her shirt. Trembling fingers started to unbutton it to reveal her not so sexy, practical white bra. "Let's start with this..." The cotton material was pushed down her shoulders and her small hands went around back to start unhooking her bra for him. "Looking at each other's bodies." They were out there protected by the tall sunflowers. Alone and very private and intimate.
