We all knew that this moment would come, didn’t we? We knew it would be soon but still our hearts ache. We know it is the rational thing to do but still we can’t help but shed a tear or two.

Reading the news, I felt my eyes wetting. It’s because I’ve never known Die Nationalmannschaft without Bastian Schweinsteiger. It’s because he embodies everything that makes me love this team - the never-give-up attitude, the passion, the clever game, the endless dedication, the gentlemanship. It’s because of all the tears of joy… and the tears of sadness because I always knew that he would come back stronger. It’s because I saw him grow from Schweini to Bastian Schweinsteiger, the captian of the Germany National Team. It’s because it marks an end of an era, era filled with rises and falls, triumphs and failures.
