Anonymous asked:

What's your best advice for new grads?

Read this entire blog from start to finish.

Kidding.

Use your first principles. Ask questions if you’re unsure. Don’t study at home, you need down time.

But seriously, read these:

They’re the best general advice I have for you right now.

You know you’re a vet student when...

1. You’re self conscious about smelling bad when commuting home from uni

2. You think that talking about gross anatomy and pathology makes for appropriate dinner conversation

3. The first thing people say to you is, “You must like animals huh?”

4. People ask you for advice on their pet and all the conversation ever leads to is you saying “Hmmm, I am not sure, better take it to your vet”

5. You are used to being forever behind in your uni work

6. You don’t pat peoples pets anymore…you palpate them

7. People look over your shoulder to have a sneak at what you’re reading they wish they hadn’t (haha, especially awkward when it is reproductive anatomy)

8. You feel the need to understand medical shows

9. You’re uni notes are covered in strange smudges….red, brown, green

10. You need to wash your lab coat separately from your other clothes (never had that issue after physics pracs XD)

Well that’s been my experience anyway.

A cat was brought in for one episode of vomiting and rubbing at its eye.  The cat would not allow a thorough oral exam without hissing and trying to bite.

When examining the eye a small hard object was discovered embedded in the lid – not just firm, but HARD.  It could not be seen unless the eyelid was manually pulled down.  An attempt was made to remove it and it was STUCK SOLID, which was deeply concerning.

As it turned out, the tiny dark object seen in the lower lid?

A FULL-SIZED SEWING NEEDLE, thread still attached!  The cat had tried to swallow it, but instead it stabbed through the roof of the cat’s mouth all the way up into the interior of the eyelid, narrowly missing the globe of the eye.  No wonder the cat didn’t cooperate for an oral exam.

The cat exhibited no ill effects after treatment with pain relief and antibiotics, and avoided surgery for an intestinal string and needle foreign body.  Cats are truly ridiculous and amazing!

Did you know?

It is advised when doing CPR on a human or animal to sing either “Staying Alive by The Bee Gees” or “Another One Bites The Dust by Queen” to maintain good rhythm. These songs were specifically chosen as they have 100 beats per minute which matches the recommended CPR rate of 100 chest compressions per minute. But please take a moment to appreciate the irony of this song choice…….
