I don’t know what ads Facebook shows you each day, but on my end, it’s all attractive people who are “obsessed with these sheets.” In one version, a man and woman are sitting in their underwear and laughing. Looks like a good time, I think to myself. Maybe I should buy some of new sheets and sit in my underwear and have a laugh. But then I notice that they’re eating Chinese take-out in bed, nay in crisp, clean, obsession-worthy sheets, and I realize that I have nothing in common with these garbage monsters.

The best children’s books aren’t the ones that impart moral lessons. The best children’s books are the ones that plant indelible memories and teach by way of detail: Madeline’s removed appendix; the ‘grisly’ pigeon that Eloise yells at until he flies over to the Sherry-Netherland. Who knows what a young reader will glom onto and why; a growing mind is populated arbitrarily.
