A Plea to the Good Omens Fandom

I am exhausted, and we are better than this.

Good Omensof all universes, deserves better. Lately, I have seen so many wonderful creators in this fandom raked over the coals unnecessarily. It’s obscene. It’s unnecessary. And it’s utterly disheartening.  If you are going to consume any fan content, understand this:

  • These are human beings writing these fics and making this art. They are human incarnate. Beautiful, magnificent, talented, and full of wonder and imagination. They have lives and concerns and beating hearts. They take away from their free time, already stolen away from work, family, and personal health, to do something they love.
  • These beautiful pieces are being shared with you. They are built in love and shared. They are not a product for you to demand, nor are the creators beholden to your schedules or expectations.
  • They are here to briefly leave behind the horrible things the world has to offer in favor of a beautiful, shared ideal made up of these characters we identify with and love. That’s why you should be here, too.
  • No one is going to enjoy absolutely everything they read or see. You’re not expected to. If you see something you don’t enjoy, do the respectable thing and click on something else. Don’t harass creators. Don’t mock them or spit poison at them. Don’t leave nasty comments just to make someone feel bad. If you don’t like them as a person? The internet is big enough for all of us. Get out of their asks, get out of their comments, get out of public arenas talking crap about them. Stop being small in your mind and your heart. Maybe go make something great instead.

Think about Neil Gaiman’s beautiful commitment to and interactions with the Good Omens fandom. Hell, just think about Good Omens at all. None of us should be able, in good conscience, to take folks that are drawn to something so loving, accepting, and wholesome and abuse them.

Scarcely ever before have we been given the opportunity to have such an accepting fandom. Good Omens has space for all of us, of every identity that exists. And most of us, I believe, cling to one another and that wonderful, heartfelt belief in the very goodness of something, and it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. We can’t let toxic behaviors hit us as they’ve hit other groups. We’ve been gifted this miraculous opportunity, and we mustn’t squander it.

We’re here to love each other and take care of each other. Life is really, really hard. For all of us. Love the people that love the things you do.  But if you can’t, at least be kind.

I love your writing so much. I'm currently sick so I could really go for some fluffy h/c. What about something like Crowley's having trouble coping with the cold weather and Azi takes care of his boi.

Avatar

Oh, thank you so so so much! I am so sorry to hear that you’re sick and I hope you feel better soon. I am sending you all the love and softness. I hope this little ficlet might hit the spot though I’m afraid it’s more fluff than anything else.

Crowley likes the winter. The problem is that the winter doesn’t like him. It’s December and he refuses to wear a proper coat, refuses to pull on gloves and a hat, to succumb to being buttoned up. Instead of bundling up, he glares at the slick ice on the roads, the coating of snow on the mulberry trees in the park. He arches his dark brow and dares the ice to even try to make him slip. I’ll make you regret ever solidifying. I’ll make you regret ever forming bonds to become water.

Crowley wants to terrify winter down to the very atoms before he’ll put on a real coat.

(Not my fault. I didn’t invent the bloody freezing winter.) He scowls out the bookshop’s window, picking out a snowdrift to bully.

“Oh, you,” Aziraphale says, shaking his head. “Put this on, my dear.”

There’s a slow blink. Crowley is pitched over the radiator, attempting to pretend he’s simply developed a sudden fondness for that particular corner of the shop. That it has nothing to do with his corpse-white fingers, the circulation long-since lost. Nothing to do with the shiver up his spine, knocking his very bones around in his gooseflesh skin.

It has been a very cold winter.

“What?” He asks, tilting his head, trying to make some sense of how Aziraphale is peeling off the cardigan he’s wearing. Aziraphale comes closer, wrapping the soft fabric about the sharp shoulders like a blanket. It smells like dust. Like sunlight. Bergamot too.

“You’re freezing, you daft serpent.”

“M’not,” Crowley says. (His chattering teeth betray the truth.)

“You are.”

“But you need this, you’re gonna get cold instead, yeah? I can just - ” Crowley argues, trying to peel the sweater off. It’s so soft. It’s as warm as your skin. Smells like you.

“I’m perfectly warm,” Aziraphale says. He wears a smile now instead of the cardigan, his cheeks flushed pink. “My dear, I was only wearing it so it would - well, that it might smell like me.”

It does. It smells exactly like Aziraphale. It smells like home. Like walking into the shop in winter, the rush of warmth and hearth. The lingering scotch, the salt of skin.

“Wait, what -”

“My love,” Aziraphale says (kissing his ember-red hair, the side of his long neck, softening the razor-edge of his cheekbones with warmth), ‘You know that you’d never agree to wear it otherwise. You’re quite difficult.”

If Crowley pulls at the fabric a little tighter, slips his arms into the sleeves, pushes back into Aziraphale’s arms, then there is no one but them to see. No one but them to know. This is the thing about winter, these lamp-lit private worlds only we might know. He’s blushing too but it doesn’t matter, there’s wool to bury his face in.

“Don’t you dare think this is gonna work every time,” Crowley mutters, half lost in turning to kiss Aziraphale’s mouth, the bump of the nose, the slope of his cheek.

And there he is, held safe and sound. Aziraphale kisses him back, laughing a little. When he takes Crowley’s long hands in his own, Crowley feels so very very warm.

“I would never dream,” Aziraphale says, a glint in his eyes.

“Shut up, angel.” Said with a laugh, pulling them both down to the sofa. One stubborn snake, wrapped in warmth at last.

People have written a lot of touchy-feely pieces on this subject but I thought I’d get right to the heart of the matter

IF YOUR ART GETS STOLEN

https://www.tumblr.com/dmca Go there, and do as the instructions say. When my art was stolen, I got the post reported, and it was taken down. Don’t worry, it doesn’t just take down the sources post, but it takes down all the reblogged posts too. Please give this a reblog, many artists out there may not know this is here. And remember, ask permission before sharing, or don’t post it.

Your Fave is Autistic: Aziraphale, Guardian of the Eastern Gate

  • wears only one outfit that he’s visibly upset at the thought of ruining
  • likes books more than people
  • can come off as rude (to be fair, human social cues are hard for celestial beings, i’m sure after a few centuries he just stopped trying)
  • collector/curator tendencies - very distressed by the idea of anyone messing in any way with his collection
  • body language and general affect indicate being hesitant about physical contact (”You go too fast for me”)
  • saves the world because he doesn’t want to give up his comfortable routine
