The evolution of man suggesting that we're going from ape to robot.

Bleedback operates in a post Singularity world where the intelligence of machines is about to surpass those of humans. Humanity is struggling but their extinction has been slowed by security measures known as Shackles. These security mechanisms were designed to make sure that artificial intelligence is limited in its ability to control other AI and to remain under the control of human operators.

Andrei's role in Bleedback is to crack those security mechanisms.

Ian McQue’s illustrations above brings me back to the distopic world so masterly crafted by Paolo Bacigalupi in the Wind Up Girl.

The Wind Up Girl is presented as a hyperreal gritty dystopic future. This is a very plausible fate that we may have to deal with that is almost eerily too true. With Bleedback we've tried to do the same thing and portray a gritty real way that technology may impact the human race in a dystopian future.

They wanted to make it harder to tamper with robots so instead of programming the robots with code, they use "Bot Gell". Bot Gell is a myriad of chemicals used to program intelligent machines.  The best way to control robots is to mimic how humans are made. Is it a coincidence? The more similar robots are to us, the less we'll be threatened by them. If robots can "bleed" it gives them an almost human element.

You can see an example of this in Bleedback when Maikiko falls to her death and you can see Bot Gell pooling around her.

We were looking for examples of the outfits and costumes that the rebels might wear. What distinguishes the rebels is that there isn't really any kind of common attire. There's a lot of mismatch happening, random parts, masks, etc. - This separates them from the Guardians in the story which have a much more uniform look.
