REVIEW: PETROL GIRLS S/T 7".

Debut EP from this London four piece featuring Ren Aldridge of Ren Spits At Magpies fame. They tag themselves as “raging feminist hardcore” so I was expecting something in the Punch-vein, but they’re actually surprisingly slow and considered, which makes a nice change. Don’t get me wrong, I love feminist powerviolence as much as anyone else, but sometimes it’s nice to be able to hear lyrics like these clearly. Opening track Restless has a sound that comes off a bit like early Computers stuff, but with the odd Gnarwolves-esque riff whereas the other two are all Team Dresch, right down to the vocal harmonies. It’s perfect. Fucking perfect. More bands need to sound like Team Dresch. For some reason Gnarwolves come springing to mind as a comparison more often than seems likely – they’ve just got that same mixture of melodic hardcore contrasted with that heavier sense of recklessness that sometimes just cuts loose unexpectedly.

But Petrol Girls are saying something much more fucking important - it’s the lyrics that are the raging part. No more considered critiques, just rage – make me howl, question all authority, protest is dead. Fuck yeah. Petrol Girls are fucking pissed, and actually reading the lyrics feels pretty essential. I wouldn’t expect anything else from a band fronted by Ren, who is fast becoming one of the most important voices in the scene, and someone I always enjoy reading stuff by. You need to check this out, basically. I can’t wait for more from them, or for the chance to catch them live – I can’t get enough of this goddamn EP.
