I woke up at 4 am to catch a 6 am flight from Milwaukee to Chicago to catch an early flight to Austin to do some press stuff before the rest of the band flies in tomorrow.

I got to the airport and checked in, only do discover that the first flight was cancelled. I got a bus voucher to get to O’Hare to make the connection. And the bus didn’t show up. Missed the flight to Austin. Still no flight available to O’Hare. Took a bus to O’Hare. Hung out for 5 hours to catch the next flight to Austin. Found out the interview could not be rescheduled.

Bought Murakami’s Kafka On The Shore at the airport. What a beautiful book. I got gratefully and joyfully lost in it. I got halfway through by the time we touched down in Texas.

Flight to Austin got in early. Our intrepid manager Jeff had been tracking the flight, saw we were landing early, and connected with the good people at Uproxx, who made the interview with Milwaukee expat Steve Hyden still happen.

Got a lovely dinner at the South Congress Cafe and went to the hotel. I’m going to shower and keep reading this Murakami.

I’m a little wobbly from the day, but you have to stay rubberboned when traveling. Rigidity gets broken. It feels good to be here with the sole mission of playing great shows with this band of people I trust and believe in and love. If you’re at a show this week, I’m going to prove it to you.

Field Report @ SXSW 2018 Essentials

It can be a challenge to know what to bring along for fly dates. You don’t want to bring too much stuff, especially at SXSW, where there are a million bands loading in and out of every conceivable venue. You don’t want to bring too little, because you need to put on a good show– that’s why you’re there.

Here’s what I’m flying with:

1) Pelican case for pedals. These cases are sturdy ad reliable and will keep instruments safe and secure. It has wheels, which is a huge plus for walk-up load-ins at SXSW. And it fits in the overhead compartment.

 2) Filson laptop bag. Their rugged briefcases are great, but the normal size is too small to fit clothes, Dopp kit, coffee grinder, Aeropress and a laptop. This model is just the right size, and provides just a little extra padding for fragile equipment.

3) Mono M80 guitar bag. I prefer to have a few guitars out with me for alternate tunings and backups, but I’m keeping it lean on this trip. Mono makes a good soft case to protect an electric guitar, and it has a special neck support to help prevent it from snapping when it gets banged around. It can fit in an overhead or a coat closet if your flight attendant is kind, but is durable enough to handle being gatechecked too.

And in the case is a Rivolta  Combinata, a lovely collaboration between acclaimed boutique guitar builder Dennis Fano and Eastwood guitars. It stays in tune, doesn’t break strings, and can be clean or dirty. I really dig this guitar– it covers a lot of ground.

I’ve got a 6:00 am flight tomorrow, which is daylight savings, which means 5:00 am. I’m doing some laundry, going to pick up some extra guitar strings, and go to bed early.
