Ah, so that’s where Charlie is. Turning so as to keep all the girls in his periphery, Owen leta hand slowly lower and rub that spot just at the top of her head, his lips twisting in a rueful smile. “Charlie, you little shit, you gotta stop sneaking up on me likethat.” Despite the command in his words, he doesn’t seem thatangry. So long as Charlie doesn’t sneak up for a snack, he’s alright.
Her heart was POUNDING, she snapped and hissed at the guards. She didn’t want them a n y w h e r e near her. Everywhere she turned, every step she took brought the raptor closer to another gun. She HATED this. Echo could vaguely hear the sound of her ALPHA’S voice. It calmed her down slightly, but it still wasn't enough. The sound of her sisters calling her from within the paddock stressed her out even more.
Echo didn’t respond at first to the sound of Owen’s whistle. She couldn’t help but try and keep her eyes on e v e r y single human that stood around her. What if they tried to attack? What if they tried to blindside her? She shifted restlessly on her feet and her tail swung back and forth anxiously.
“— let me see those eyes. Look at me not them.”
Echo made a distressed call as she looked at her ALPHA. His presence calmed her considerably, however the anxiety was still there. She was alone and without her pack. A sitting duck.
The guards flinched back from those deadly jaws and he felt like letting her have at them. They nearly deserve to be eaten after all this shit. “I said back the hell up! Get back in your damn van. If I can’t get her, then you can try, got it?!” Reluctantly, the ACU began to draw away, but kept their eyes and weapons on the raptor as they fell back. Owen’s narrowed eyes nervously took in every detail of the raptor, how her tail flicked and her eyes swept back and forth over the ACU team, how her raspy voice rose in a high pitched alarm. It pissed him off, seeing Echo so clearly anxious and perhaps even --frightened. Come on, focus. Focus, girl. And she did, thank God. Those slitted eyes came to rest on him and he nodded and clicked in his teeth in encouragement. “That’s the way. You’re okay, Echo. You’re not alone.” In reality, the girls knew only key words, or so he thought. But he gave reassurance anyway, hoping it came across one way or another. Slowly, he stretched out a hand, waving her forward. “Here, Echo. Come to me. Just me.”
OPEN for OWENS
“Think you can keep your girls from eating me long enough for me to do my job?
“D’ya think you can show a little respect and trust me to do mine?” Seriously, if he didn’t have faith in him, why even risk it?
Did you ever cuddle the girls when they were little?
His brow furrows, seemingly caught off guard by the question. And, intruth, he is. Why do so many people ignore the apex predator part of hisgirls? Why do they want to indulge the idea of the raptors being –tame? “Lemme ask you a question. Do you think my raptors are overgrown, scaled puppies? Agile lap cats without the fur and whiskers? Well, hate to break it to you, but they aren’t. They are not a domesticated breed, haven’t had their instincts dulled by centuries of human codependency. So while I did handle and hold them during their hatchling stage, it was with with the intent of fostering trust and respect and familiarizing them with human contact, not cuddling.”
Headcanon: This is more than obvious in canon, but Owen swears, a lot. He picked up this nasty habit from not only his years in the Navy, but his home life as well. Swearing was never really that taboo in his family and sometimes was even used in affectionate ways [for a relatable example, today calling someone a little shit is often a cute thing]. He is not one to intentionally censor himself without good reason. The only time he even makes the effort is if he is in the company of very young children or in a highly professional setting. So, it must be noted by those who interact with him that foul language does not always necessarily connote anger or irritation, but simply makes up his general vocabulary.
But it was a Raptor. Did he not understand the depths of his words?! Here he’d come with his family, as a well to do director from LA to film a promo and this man had just shown him a raptor - not only shown but actively controlled the thing. So he’d spoken out of turn in dumbfounded-ness. He was not unaccustomed to reading people on set but animals were another thing entirely, yet alone a dinosaur. Clearing his throat he looked askance to the man with a curt nod, “Apologies, this is just a bit more than what I’m accustomed to.”
“That’s understandable, but you have to realize, you can’t slip up around these creatures. Not once. A mistake means d e a t h, so I need to be completely focused while you’re here, got it?” The words were spoken without formality and hardly a trace of respect either.Having this Hollywood big-shot so close to the animals was a dip-shit idea, one corporate foolishly allowed once the right dollar signs appeared. So, Owen had to cooperate, but that didn’t mean he had to like it.
“If you ask me, she was being rude.” Blue mumbled from where she sat almost perched on top of one the shorter fences. She was messing with her nails a bit to avoid eye contact with Owen because seeing that disappointed look in his eye was her least favorite thing. “I don’t have to knock it off.”
“WelI I didn’t ask you, so I don’t care.” Not once did his eyes waver as he glared down at her, satisfied to see her look away. She felt chastised, if not sorry. That was something. “And you do have to knock it off, or else deal with the consequences. It’s your choice, Blue, but I’d suggest you get your ass off your shoulders and straighten up.”
raptrespect liked for a starter!
Echo had gotten out of the paddock— The gate was up a little to high and open a little too long. She had SLIPPED through the opening and ran after her pray. Sadly the prey had gotten away and now she was SURROUNDED. She felt trapped. The third eldest was in DISTRESS.
The circle of guards with stun guns and taser spears at the ready was abruptly broken, the wall shattered with one angry shove. “Stand down! All of you idiots stand down and back away from MY raptor. All this--,” he gestured brusquely, a jerk of his palm indicating the mass of armored men and weaponry encroaching on the single dinosaur, “--is freaking the hell out of her. Back up and let me do my damn job!” Without pause, Owen walked carefully toward his lost girl, whistling softly to get her attention. “Hey, pretty girl, lemme see those eyes. Look at me, not them.” Getting her attention was the first priority. If she decided to focus in on one of the stupid ACU members instead, this little pow-wow could get ugly.
