So I was editing and…
EPIC MINDSCREW (opening and ending analysis)
I JUST REALISED
THE OPENING SONG IS FROM YUU’S POV
THE ENDING SONG IS FROM MIKA’S POV
AND. THEY. REPLY. TO. EACH. OTHER. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THEY ARE LITERALLY TALKING ABOUT THE OTHER IN THEIR RESPECTIVE SONG
THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL I’M GONNA CRY you can read the opening lyrics here (x) and the ending lyrics here (x). Once you look at the lyrics as talking about each other it completely changes the way you read it.
I would strongly recommend reading both the lyrics yourself because there are a lot of details, but here’s some of the key parts I’ve picked up on which correspond to each other:
opening (Yuu): So don’t take all of the blame we are all swept away/ Don’t take all of the weight you. You always do
ending (Mika): I must be sacrificed/ So I can help you all/ I’ll be a scapegoat if I can/ My resolution failed/ And all who died
That’s pretty much Mika taking on all the blame and Yuu telling him not to
opening (Yuu): I’ll come and get you […] I’ll be there hold on […] So where are you now?/ I’ll reach you at dawn/ Before you can be turned
ending (Mika): You’re waiting right here/ A way for me to make it back/ Some way I won’t need to attack/ Everything has gone so wrong
I can see some pretty clear foreshadowing here. We know that Mika hasn’t been turned into a full vampire yet and when Mika says “a way to make it back, some way I won’t need to attack” that implies that Yuu will work out a solution or cure to Mika’s semi vampirisim. But when Yuu says in the opening “I’ll reach you at dawn, before you can be turned”, that suggests there’s going to be a point where Mika is going to be in danger of becoming a full vampire. The only way we’ve been shown so far of that happening is by Mika drinking human blood- so Yuu is going to have to reach him with the cure before that happens.
opening (Yuu): The fallen angels you run with don’t know/ It is our pain that makes us human after all/ Warm old sepia photographs show/ Our fragile precious world
ending (Mika): The fallen angels I run with all know/ It’s our fear that makes us human after all/ Torn old sepia photographs show/ Our fragile little world
So Mika is currently on the vampire’s side- if they’re referring to the vampires, the vampires are fallen angels. This is a huge revelation to the whole plot of Owari no Seraph, especially since Yuu and Mika are both part angel. It would begin to explain how the vampires suddenly appeared out of nowhere and how they had the power to destroy the world.
These two verses also show some clear mirroring in lyrics which proves again how they’re interconnected. It’s also interesting to note the different attitudes/personalities Mika and Yuu have just by the way they word their lines, such as Yuu describing the sepia photographs (which usually is a metaphor for past memories) as warm but Mika describes them as cold.
And now for some final heartbreaking foreshadowing
Yuu (opening): If you wanna fight with me/ Then go ahead and fight with me/ Cos all I wanna do is help you man/ You will be the death of me/ The power of our army has been cut with a scythe/ And if we lose you to them we may never survive/ You can leave but you must first believe/ Just one step at a time and keep your head up boy and/ You’ll be free
This, in my opinion, is basically foreshadowing how Owari no Seraph will end. Mika and Yuu will be forced to fight each other and the human army has been reduced in power by being cut with a scythe. This could be a metaphor, or it could be referring to the one character with a scythe- Shinoa. So it’s possible she’ll be manipulated, turn evil or maybe realise how corrupt the army is and lash out against them.
When Yuu says “if we lose you to them we may never survive” this is important. Why would be it be such a big factor if Mika stays with the vampires? One valid answer is because he’s too powerful- so this suggests that Mika will activate his seraph side (possibly because of his blood thirst as mentioned above). Yuu will want to free Mika from the vampires and, as bolded, the series could end with Yuu’s death at Mika’s hands.
This possible outcome of Yuu’s death can be supported by the well known Lucifer/Michael analysis by owari-no-mikacchan (x) as well as my other post on the ending title “scapegoat” in relation to Mika because it would place in him in the perfect vulnerable position to be made a scapegoat for other larger events (x).
Everything written above is as usual subjective and open to personal opinion as a piece of analysis, and please feel free to comment in tags/replies/my inbox but please excuse me while I go cry now
what a sad loaf of bread
SORARU. HAS. A FUCKING. TENGA. IM DYING
Not taking any chances
I scrolled past this and the guilt was too much
Kanji: 末, 未, and 本 (let’s climb a tree!)
I’ve got three kanji today, each made from the kanji for tree 木 with an extra line added!
…And yes, I do know exactly how you feel when you see 未 and 末.
Luckily, they actually kind of make sense! If you imagine yourself climbing a tree 木, the extra line always shows where you are.
For 本 (origin), you’re at the roots, the source of the tree. 本 is a common kanji that’s picked up some extra meanings through the years; it can also mean “book” (I guess you use books as sources of information?) or a counter for long skinny things (as in one “stick of” something—I guess roots ARE long and skinny).
- 日本 (にほん) Japan (日=”sun”, “source of the sun” = “Land of the Rising Sun”)
- 本物 (ほんもの) the real thing, the original one (物 thing)
- 本屋 (ほんや) bookstore (-屋 store)
- 一本 (いっぽん) one (of something long and skinny, 一 “one”)
For 未 (not yet), the biggest line is in the middle. That’s where you are—you haven’t reached the top of the tree yet.
- 未来 (みらい) future (“hasn’t come yet” 来= come)
- 未知 (みち) unknown (知 “know”)
- 未成年 (みせいねん) minor, underage (“hasn’t become of age yet” 成 become, 年 year)
For 末 (end), the big line is way out at the very ends of the branches. You’ve reached the “end” of the tree now.
- 週末 (しゅうまつ) weekend (週 week)
- 結末 (けつまつ) conclusion (結 tie together)
- 末っ子 (すえっこ) youngest child (子 child)
And if it’s any consolation, I don’t know of any words that are identical except that one has 未 and the other has 末, so you’ll at least have the rest of the word to help you out if you’ve got an ambiguous font style.
IS that any consolation? I PROMISE THEY LOOK WAY DIFFERENT TO ME NOW, THE HUMAN BRAIN IS AN AMAZING THING AND YOURS WILL FIGURE IT OUT EVENTUALLY.
Mafumafu learnt an important lesson about Soraru that day.
