for me, the heart of monkey man was its immense love for india, and the confidence of articulating that love through representation and criticism—the things that make india beautiful are not the colorist, hindu-nationalist propoganda stories of bollywood but largeness of the diaspora: indians who trans, who are muslim, who have been oppressed by their government, who are unacknowledged by society, etc—and prevail despite the odds stacked against them. they are encouraged to be themselves and fight against these occupational forces.

major props to dev patel for showing that hey, you actually can make a movie about indians in a way that perfectly encapsulates the various cultures, mythologies, AND egregious political climate, while also highlighting indian people and giving them the recognition and respect they often don't recieve in western—OR bollywood—canon. now that we know it's possible (it always was) i want more! thanks!

(also it helped that he was either in a suit, shirtless, or covered in blood [sometimes two at a time] for most of this movie. dev patel, i literally only need one chance...)

Friendly reminder to not punish yourself for creating.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by this?

I have a tendency to beat myself up whenever something I make doesn’t meet my expectations (which is always). The result is that finishing something = bad feelings: I am effectively punishing myself for having created something. The natural reaction to this punishment is an aversion to creation, meaning that my perfectionism is harming me, not only by causing me to despise what I do make and by impeding the creative process, but by attacking even my desire to create.

If you’re a shorter person and you’re having a problem with the end of the tie hanging down below your waist, making you look like a tacky idiot or a small child, the trick is to learn a knot that wraps more of the tie fabric around and around on itself. A full Windsor knot is great for this.

And that tie-a-tie site is super helpful for all kinds of tie knots! I’m a cisgender woman (I guess ?) but I like wearing suits and ties in winter because it makes such an easy “uniform” that you can vary with different colours and patterns on your shirts and ties. I’ve still never tried to buy suits in men’s shops because I know they would need heaps of tailoring to be wearable (I’m pear-shaped) and I would just be embarrassed in a way that I’m not going in to buy shirts or ties.

finally got a chance to visit the geek cafe in Anaheim, which is having a Homestuck event right now. annoyed my former-Homestuck friend from the moment we walked in by pointing to every female troll standee and asking “is this Vriska? Is this one Vriska?”

my husband, tiredly following behind me: no that's not Vriska. Vriska is the one with the eyepatch, because her eye has eight pupils in it.

me: That's amazing! Please do not give me any followup information whatsoever, I want to revel in this!

I invoke my 5th amendment right to remain silent

thinking about that post thats like. to avoid bloatware every game dev team should be required to have one guy that has to play the game on a shitty laptop. in the same spirit i think every movie and tv director should have to watch their movie/show on a small tv or laptop screen in a bright room and fix the lighting until its possible to see whats going on on the screen in those conditions

Ugh, was having a great time mocking my recently imprisoned rival when I noticed the camera positioning makes it so that I appear behind the bars, thus framing me as trapped in a metaphorical prison of the narrative, now my whole day is ruined. Fuck.

I get it, man. The other day, I survived a shootout, only to realize that a stray bullet went through a mirror in such a way as to look from the camera's perspective like I got shot in the head through the mirror, so now I have to acknowledge that something that could be reasonably referred to as "me" really did die that day, and it's just like "jfc, gimme a BREAK"

ugh dont even get me started on how the other day i tried to sit on the throne of my conquered foe and light a cigar to celebrate my victory but the lighter wouldnt work and it had to be lighted by the vizier who used to work for my enemy but that i enlisted to work as a double agent and help me in my coup. that jerk afterwards said with a devilish smile "ill always be at your service my liege" and i just KNOW that he said that exact same thing to the previous ruler. signifying that my victory was phyrric since i am still caught in an endless cycle of violence and betrayal. that really spoiled the whole mood
