For people who can’t see the image for some reason:

It’s a “Dear Abby” column, published in 1995. The letter writer, “Not Looking for a Girlfriend in New Jersey,” identifies as a 53 year old male virgin with no interest in either women or men, despite coworkers having assumptions that his lack of a family means he must be gay.

This man expresses no concern about his situation (other than the presumed exhaustion at being continually misidentified), and suggests he was writing simply so other people could see that “a man who had no interest in sex” exists.

Abby blows it out of the ballpark with her response:

Here we have the bastion of middle American, the “nice White lady with all the answers”, normalizing this man’s experience and literally telling him to ignore the haters. Pre Millennium. She even calmly supplies this man with the language to identify himself, since he seems not to have encountered it before; that must have been so empowering for him, to have a word for his experience and identity, and to hear that others shared it.

Everyone, you are valid, and your identity is accountable to no one except yourself.

TOWN MANSION

This impressive Town Mansion was built in 1912 by order of Max von der Becke, son of a German entrepreneur. His father was one of the founders of what would later become the transatlantic shipping company Red Star Line. He lived in the mansion, with his wife and two sons, until his death in 1937. The eclectic-style mansion with a neo-Louis XVI touch is part of Jean-Laurent Hasse’s later oeuvre. The architect built a large number of distinguished bourgeois houses in eclectic and neo-Flemish Renaissance style in Antwerp. After von der Becke’s death, the property was sold to Maurice Herbosch. Numerous modifications and embellishments to the house date from his period. He had the figurative stained-glass windows and paneling installed, among other things. After Herbosch’s death in 1961, his widow continued to live in the mansion until 1963. The valuable furniture of this building is owned by the provincial government and has been kept in a depot for many years. The mansion was intended to house the official residence of the governor. Given the high renovation costs that the conversion would entail, this never happened.
