I love that they couldn’t implement anything profitable and they had to get rid of tumblr live because 99% of people hated it but the second they gave us a useless button we lose our minds

We were saved because of you. We were given a miracle because of you. We are a family because of you. And nothing could ever be broken, that we can’t fix... together.

what you have to understand is lamy dark lilac (2016, the real lamy dark lilac) still gets sold for hundreds of dollars per bottle by resellers when it originally sold for $10. and people bought it because they loved that limited edition ink so much. LDL is one of the grail inks for fountain pen ink collectors, and one of the most common reasons to mix fountain pen ink is to try to imitate it.

but the dyes used in the original lamy dark lilac are no longer even available, and it took several lamy representatives promising it was the exact same ink before anyone told the truth. and remember: THE DYES WERE NEVER AVAILABLE FROM THE START OF PRODUCTION. this is not a matter of inconsistency between batches, lamy knew that the ink would have to be completely different and they called it dark lilac anyway while several of their representatives communicated that it was the exact same ink.

people were fighting and fighting and fighting because it was obviously a different formula, it looked different, but lamy said it was the same, so the person doing the swab of the color must have been wrong, because lamy would never lie. and then when lamy admitted it was a completely different ink, there was fighting about whether or not it is wrong to call a product a re-release of the something while it is completely different. some lamy fans refuse to admit lamy can ever do anything wrong, when they do a ton of shit wrong.

there was no reason to call this ink a re-release of dark lilac other than as a cash grab for any sucker who had the gall to believe that when lamy calls something a re-release of one of the most beloved fountain pen inks of all time, that it would actually be the same ink.

I personally think that if you claim to be re-releasing one of the most famous inks in the world, it should actually be the same ink, or name it something different. lamy deep lilac. lamy new lilac. lamy green lilac because of the green sheen instead of the gold sheen lamy dark lilac became famous for. fucking, anything else

lamy is a piece of work, their quality control has been shit for years, and they make a ton of money by enshittifying their products for people who miss when they were less trash.

damn good thing the entire company just got bought out by mitsubishi pencil company.

i think one of the most important things you learn about making connections with others is that a significant portion of the time people just do not know theyre doing what theyre doing

sometimes someone is acting selfish because they just didnt think you had any interest in what theyre hogging. sometimes you dont get invited to the movies because your friend could have sworn that you said no. sometimes you think someone is mad at you because theyre bad at hiding how little sleep they got. we are all like little worlds that briefly crash into one another from time to time and we just arent physically capable of seeing the whole picture at once in those moments. and learning that really changed everything!

In my head, I call this "vase of flowers" thinking.

See, when I started driving, I would get irritated by people who drove Soooo Slowly... like, the ones who slow down to 10 MPH to take a turn kind of slow. And then one day I was taking a vase of flowers to an event, and even though I'd strapped it in carefully you can bet I was taking the turns extra carefully to keep it from tipping over, slowing way down, and... oh.

And, like, there are definitely unpleasant people in the world. There are definitely people who are toxic, or just don't care about other people, or have a pattern of hurtful behavior. But there are a lot of people who are just trying to deliver a vase of flowers.

I swear some of you must be captioning images poorly on purpose. Either that or Tumblr's piss-poor media literacy extends so far that people genuinely believe mindlessly writing whatever details they notice at random is somehow useful to people.

As an example, I saw a thread in which someone replied with a photo of a cat as a reaction to someone else's post. It's clear from context that the cat's body language was meant to evoke a quiet thoughtfulness in response. Someone else followed up with an image description that went into excruciating detail about the cat's coloration, its markings, its fur length, its eye color, then described the color of the paint on the walls, took time to mention the random objects in the background, and *didn't* describe the cat's pose whatsoever.

Look, if you're going to try to "helpfully" caption an image, please make some effort to understand what the image is trying to communicate so that you can write a *useful* description. If someone says "wow, this is a weird looking cat" then sure, describe the markings in full detail. If someone goes "me when you take my juice box" with an angry-looking kitten, maybe talk about the cat's stance and apparent expression and skip the part where you list every title you see on the bookshelf in the background.

This is getting more traction than I actually hoped for. I'm torn on whether to lock reblogs because...while I think this is a message that folks need to hear, it'd probably be more useful to hear it in a form written to be persuasive and not just a vent post I slapped out because I was feeling grouchy.

I want to add that it's not just this, but emphasizing the wrong elements of an image can be actively misleading. Imagine an image description that goes something like:

"There is a woman standing alone in a room. Her skin is an inhuman, unnatural shade of yellow. She has huge, bulging round eyes and grins with an exaggerated overbite and no visible jawline. One hand, missing a finger, clutches a brown lump."

...and the image in question is the Marge Simpson "I just think they're neat" picture. That description sure makes you think of some sickly and deformed mutant, but it's just describing the art style of the Simpsons cartoon. And despite what the description might lead you to believe, within the context of the show there's nothing at all unusual about the character's appearance. The choice to write so much about how she looks, however, implies that those characteristics are the most important details a viewer would take from looking at the image.

I literally saw someone give an image description of a Simpsons frame like this, by the way, going as far as to make the character seem physically disabled. It was a baffling decision on the part of the transcriber, who could have just said, for example: "A screenshot from an episode of the Simpsons. Doctor Nick is waving hello to the viewer."

Also, recently, I had a case of someone who wrote a description of an image with animals, but it was incorrect as to the species. If you’re going to write them, you should know what it is you’re looking at. There's enough misinformation as it is on this website.

but the way every site is just becoming more obsessed with being overly family and child friendly is insane. “i cant believe you’ve done this” getting taken down from youtube for ‘violence’. the way on tiktok if you want to subtitle your video you have to jump through hoops to censor words that arent even swears or sexual or else the video gets removed. i seen someone that had to censor the word diarrhea

Of course internet censorship has been around for a while and gradually worsening but I think we’re reaching a serious point of no return. I was asked by a medical assistant in real life last week if I’d been thinking of “unaliving” myself?? You can’t escape this shit even as a grown adult going to the doctor.
