He continued to eat as he considered what was told to him. He slowed his eating to only a few bites every so often when he felt himself getting full. He patted his belly and licked his lips clean.

"Live wi-with you? I mean... I co-could do that. It seems sa-safe. You seem ni-nice and y-you don't want t-to eat me... So I'll stay. For n-now." He beamed up at Wilson before continuing to eat. After all he didn't want to waste anything.

He wasn’t too frightened of being lifted up but he couldn’t help but lock up a little while being moved. He visibly relaxed when he was set back down. His eyes lit up at the mention of food. He didn’t realize exactly how starved he was until he mentioned it. It had been so long since Percival had eaten a proper meal. What food did he like? He had to think about that.

“Fruit! I li-like fruit I think. Do you h-have strawberries? I lo-love those!” He seemed to vibrate with excitement as he thought about the fruit. His former fear seemed to be replaced by the delight of knowing he was going to be fed.

Wilson chuckled and nodded. “I do actually! I have blueberries, blackberries and raspberries too.” He trotted over to the fridge and pulled out packets of each fruit, placing them on the counter, fairly nearby Percival. “I expect they’re a bit big for you so here, let me cut them up into smaller pieces.” Wilson gently reached for the chopping board and a knife, keeping his movements slow as not to startle Percival. He washed up and chopped one of each fruit. He placed a hand under his chin, thinking for a moment, and then reached out for a bottle. He unscrewed the plastic cap and washed it out in the sink. Then he scooped up the fruit and made a tower of it inside the bottle cap, so it could be used as a sort of bowl. Pinching it between two of his fingers, he held it out to Percival.

“There you are!” He smiled. “Here, you can eat that while I pull up a chair and eat some fruit too. We can maybe get to know each other a little better.” Wilson pulled a chair from the table in his kitchen across the floor and sat next to the counter on it, reaching for a blackberry to eat himself.

He watched expectantly as Wilson prepared the fruit. Once it was handed to him he immediately dug in. He didn't at all seem to mind the juices from the fruit that rolled down his chin. It had been so long he'd nearly forgotten just how good fruits were! He hummed in delight as he practically inhaled the food.

He never felt so small before in his life but being near Wilson really put things into perspective. He tried not to stare at Wilson as he slowed down his eating. He shouldn't eat so wildly. He wasn't an animal but he couldn't help himself. He was just so excited to eat real food.

"You h-humans have nice foods. N-No wonder w-we borrowers like t-to take from you. Though I gu-guess it's kind of st-stealing..." He said bashfully as if embarrassed by what his people did. "Y-You live al-alone?"

His words didn’t sound like lies. If anything his reaction to Percival’s word was proof enough that he wasn’t lying. Slowly Percival wiped his eyes and stood. He bit on his lip and kept close to the corner of the box.

“Y-You.. Swear? I’ll b-be okay?” He asked, his tremors calming. It seemed he was starting to believe the man. “Y-You… Your na-name… Who are you? You… You aren’t li-like other humans. You think… I’m a p-person too. You actually… Look at m-me with pity rather th-than hunger. I don’t u-understand…”

He sniffed and rubbed his nose on the back of his hand. He was finally starting to relax but looked ready to flee at the drop of a hat.

Wilson nodded, rubbing the back of his neck, unsure of what to say. “I swear on my life you’ll be okay. I look at you like you’re a person because you are, and how everyone else sees you or what they tell me won’t change that. I’m so sorry for all the things humans have done to your kind, it disgusts me what they’ve done, I - I guess I am not like other humans. Anyway, my name, my name. I’m Wilson. What’s your name?” He was relieved to see the little borrower seem to calm down significantly, not so scared he was crying and screaming and all huddled up. However he still looked afraid but they could work on that, with some luck.

Wilson glanced at the box. “Would you… would you like to come out of that box? It must not be very nice in there. I would need to pick you up though, so if you’re not ready for that then I understand. I could… I could always tip the box over as gently as I could too. Once you’re out I could give you something to eat - although, you’ll have to tell me what borrowers eat because I don’t know.”

"P-Percival... I'm Percival." He hesitated a moment before speaking again. "Thank y-you for saving me. I'm sti-still not sure wh-why you'd help me b-but... I owe y-you my life."

Percival pondered his next words carefully. He could either get rolled out of the box or gently carried out. Well it didn't seem like he was going to die. So maybe being picked up wouldn't be so bad.

"Lift m-me please?"

Wilson didn’t really think about it, one minute he was looking at the tiny being and the next he’d bought him. Oh dear.

He’d been buying groceries when he looked over to the tank, where they kept borrowers they’d managed to catch or breed to be bought and actually eaten. The thought made Wilson sick to his stomach. How everyone seemed to just carelessly treat borrowers like food, and could so easily disregard their feelings and lives. Borrowers weren’t animals, they were people. They should all be free and have rights. Wilson would buy all of the poor borrowers that got caught or bred for consumption if he could, but that would be impossible. And he didn’t want to let the sickening cruel people that sold them profit. But still. This one just looked so paranoid and lonely in the corner of the desolate glass case, shaking whenever anyone approached it and watching ever so closely with fearful, wide eyes. He couldn’t let it die in such a grim way – he just couldn’t. Even if it would be terrified of him and hate him, it would be better to save it than to let it go to someone who wanted to harm it. He watched as it was scooped out of the tank and plopped into a cardboard box, handing over the money for it and then hesitantly pulling the cardboard box into his arms. He felt numb for a moment, wondering what on earth he was going to do with the poor creature once he got home. Wilson tried to walk as carefully as possible with the box as not to jostle about and terrify the tiny being inside any more than he already was. He drove home with the box on his front seat, occasionally casting a nervous glance at it whenever he stopped at a red light. He couldn’t help but wonder what kind of person they were.

He slung his groceries inside and placed the box on the counter. Taking a deep breath and waiting for a few moments, rehearsing what he’d say in his head, he opened it and looked inside.

Percival couldn’t stand being stuck in the glass. He didn’t know anything of the world outside other than his parents had been sold earlier that week and he’d never seen them again. He’d overheard the humans who’d bought them talking about eating them. He’d wept for days when he realized what had happened. He knew he was in for the same fate.

When he spotted a human getting near his tank he froze and stared up at the man with wide eyes. He was entirely silent as he was lifted up and placed into the box. He immedaitely hurried over to a corner of the box and curled up, hugging his knees tight. He didn’t even notice the movement of the box. He could only focus on his own uneven breathing and the sound of his sobs.

His head shot up when light entered the box and his eyes wide as he looked up at the man who’d bought him. His lips quivered as he opened up his mouth ever so slightly. He was terrified. What could he do? He knew he was going to die and yet he couldn’t help the small terrified scream that passed his lips. It only seemed to last a few moments before he clamped his mouth shut.

Wilson winced at the scream, his heart clenching with guilt and pity and concern. He could see the poor tiny man had actually been crying on the journey to his house, his cheeks damp and his eyes sore. He looked so sad all curled up in the corner and hugging himself for comfort. Wilson felt so ashamed of himself for being a part of a species that could treat other people so horribly based on something as simple as a size difference, guilt welling deep within the pit of his stomach and making him feel queasy. He lifted his hands to his face slowly, to show that he wasn’t going to do anything, and tried to be as reassuring as possible. His face was full of concern and his eyes were tender.

“Oh, oh hey! Don’t cry or scream, it’s okay! I won’t eat you or hurt you or - or even touch you, if you don’t want me to! I just - I, uh. I saw you in that - in the shop and I, uh. I didn’t want anyone to hurt you so I - well, I bought you so no one can. Nothing bad is going to happen to you, I promise.” Wilson fumbled for words, trying to say anything to make the poor borrower feel better.

It took a long while before Percival could even open his mouth again. When he did it all came out in a rush. "Y-you... You're ly-lying to m-me! I heard wh-what humans do! You... You're go-gonna eat m-me like they did to M-Mama and Papa!" He shouted, his head lowering and his shoulders rising as he tried to make himself smaller. "Y-You're gonna e-eat me and it's al-all because I'm s-so small!"

He then noticed the look in the man's face. He studied his face with a worried look in his own face. There seemed to be no malice in them. Not a single hint of danger. Still. Percival knew humans were good at deceit. How could be be sure?

"How d-do... I kn-know you're being h-honest?" He asked, his voice quiet and high in pitch due to fear. He was still shaking like a leaf with fresh tears welling up in his eyes.

*pokes* "Hey, smolson. Long time no see. Good to see you're still alive." She sighed, "I'm reaaally sorry about that kiss ordeal..."

“Don’t ca-call me small! I’m n-not even that short.” He huffed a bit before answering her next words. “Ah that. That’s al-alright. I suppose i-it was a dare o-of some sort?”

"Fire i-is rather he-helpful. Hmm? No no I'm fi-fine. I'm n-not one to bother others fo-for help." He chuckled softly. "It's an issue of me being st-stubborn."

“Everyone’s short to me. I’m tall.” She turned away to hide her blush. “Erm, yes it was a dare. Not that kissing you is really demeaning, but I doubt you wanted that kind of…contact from me. So…yea, sorry again…”

“I was… M-More shocked y-you accepted th-the dare at all. I mean. Despite wh-what you said kissing m-me is a bit… Negative.” He admitted, clearly not having much confidence in himself. “It’s al-alright. It’s n-no trouble at all. It’s all wa-water under the bridge, yes?”

“You aren’t THAT bad…I mean, have some faith in yourself. I’m really not trying to flirt when I say that, but flirting isn’t something I won’t object—Dang it, I’m rambling… Ignore the cherry-faced psycho in front of you.” She gathered her composure, “Yes, in the past. How’re you?”

Wilson couldn't help but laugh softly at her fumbling. Not that he was laughing at her he was more laughing at the silliness of the situation. "You'd li-like to flirt then?" He teased. "I'm well. Barely su-surviving but that's n-nothing new. How about yourself?"
