WikiLeaks Joins Forces With Billionaire Lebedev Novaya Gazeta, the Moscow newspaper controlled by former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and billionaire Alexander Lebedev, said it agreed to join forces with WikiLeaks to expose corruption in Russia. Julian Assange, founder of WikiLeaks, which publishes secret government and corporate documents online, has materials specifically about Russia that haven’t been published yet and Novaya Gazeta will help make them public, the newspaper said on its website today. “Assange said that Russians will soon find out a lot about their country and he wasn’t bluffing,” Novaya Gazeta said. “Our collaboration will expose corruption at the top tiers of political power. No one is protected from the truth.” The weekly newspaper is known in an industry dominated by state-run companies for its critical reports of the Kremlin and investigative coverage of Russian affairs. US embassy cables: Sweden's concerns about Anti-Counterfeit Trading Agreement negotiations In Johansson's opinion, the secrecy around the negotiations has led to that the legitimacy of the whole process being questioned. This, combined with the leaked European Commission document summarizing an oral account of the U.S. internet chapter proposal, forced Justice Ministry State Secretary Magnus Graner to go public earlier this month to appease the storm of critics by assuring them that the Swedish government will not agree to any ACTA provision that would require changes to current Swedish laws. READ MORE This is the biggest, least known threat facing internet freedom today. A secretive and very unpublicized treaty by a multi-nation consul to implement new internet laws. Thankfully the Swedish government has taken a stand against ACTA. Now it's our turn to spread the word, make the public more aware of the attempts to govern & limit the internet. STOP ACTA

The WikiLeaks strategy: Bank of America buys up abusive domain names According to Domain Name Wire, the US bank has been aggressively registering domain names including its board of Directors' and senior executives' names followed by "sucks" and "blows". For example, the company registered a number of domains for CEO Brian Moynihan: BrianMoynihanBlows.com, BrianMoynihanSucks.com, BrianTMoynihanBlows.com, and BrianTMoynihanSucks.com. The wire report counted hundreds of such domain name registrations on 17 December alone. They were acquired through an intermediary that frequently registers domain names on behalf of large companies, says the report. Bank of America has reputedly established a 'war room' to draw up strategy and rebutt allegations likely to emerge from the publication of thousands of internal documents by WikiLeaks. READ MORE

WTF? OMG, LOL! CIA gives WikiLeaks taskforce naughty name The CIA has launched a taskforce to assess the impact of 250,000 leaked US diplomatic cables. Its name? WikiLeaks Task Force, or WTF for short. The group will be charged with scouring the released documents to survey damage caused by the disclosures. One of the most embarrassing revelations was that the US state department had drawn up a list of information it would like on key UN figures – it later emerged the CIA had asked for the information. "Officially, the panel is called the WikiLeaks Task Force. But at CIA headquarters, it's mainly known by its all-too-apt acronym: WTF," the Washington Post reported. READ MORE

Apple Removes WikiLeaks App From App Store Looks like an unofficial iPhone and iPad app that let you view WikiLeaks content and follow the WikiLeaks Twitter account on the go has been removed from the App app store tonight. Basically the paid app was selling content available for free for $1.99. Its entry into the app store on December 17th was actually surprising, as Apple is usually quite strict about its app approval standards and WikiLeaks is quite controversial, to put it lightly . I’ve contacted both Apple and and the developer for more information and will update this post when they respond. READ MORE

US diplomatic dispatches reveal constant efforts to prevent terrorist nuclear attacks US cables leaked by WikiLeaks reveal the constant, largely unseen, work by American diplomatic missions around the world to try to keep the atomic genie in its bottle and forestall the nightmare of a terrorist nuclear attack. The cables tell hair-raising tales of casks of uranium found in wicker baskets in Burundi, a retired Russian general offering to sell "uranium plates" in Portugal, and a radioactive Armenian car on the Georgian border. As part of what the US government calls its "second line of defence", America's diplomatic corps is called out in the middle of the night when radiation detectors go off on a border crossing or smugglers turn up with fissile or radioactive materials. Each time that happens - and United Nations data suggests it has happened about 500 times in the past 15 years - it means the "first line of defence" has already been breached. The fissile material (fuel for a nuclear warhead) or radioactive isotopes (which emit harmful radiation), have already been stolen from their source. READ MORE

The vicious intimidation campaign against WikiLeaks is a dangerous attack on freedom of expression and the press. Top US politicians have branded WikiLeaks a terrorist organization, and urged corporations to shut it down. Commentators have even suggested assassinating its staff. Whatever we think of WikiLeaks, legal experts say it has likely broken no laws, and the group works with leading newspapers (NYT, Guardian, Spiegel) to carefully vet what it publishes - so far less than 1% of the cables leaked to it. We urgently need a massive public outcry to defend our basic democratic freedoms. Sign the petition to stop the crackdown — let’s reach 1 million voices this week!

And if anyone needs reminding as to WHY we NEED WikiLeaks, check this out.

WikiLeaks hints at Israeli-Palestinian cooperation A cable just released by WikiLeaks suggests close cooperation between Israel and forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas when rival Hamas militants overran the Gaza Strip three years ago. The disclosure could embarrass Abbas and his Fatah movement, which Hamas has always accused of working with the Israelis. The June 2007 cable quotes Israeli internal security chief Yuval Diskin as saying Israel had "established a very good working relationship" with Abbas' security forces. As Hamas was overrunning Gaza, he said some desperate Fatah leaders even wanted Israel to attack Hamas. Diskin said that in the West Bank, Palestinian security was sharing "almost all (its) intelligence" with Israel. Since the Gaza takeover, Abbas has governed in the West Bank.

Assange vows WikiLeaks to stay strong despite new blow WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said the site will stay strong despite another blow to its funding and the publication Sunday of new details of the sex crime allegations against him. The Australian began his third full day under "mansion arrest" at a friend's house while he fights extradition to Sweden, vowing that the whistleblowing website would continue to publish more secre US diplomatic cables. Assange on Saturday denounced Bank of America, the largest US bank, for becoming the latest institution to halt financial transactions for Wikileaks after MasterCard, PayPal, Visa Europe and others. The bank said its decision was "based upon our reasonable belief that WikiLeaks may be engaged in activities that are, among other things, inconsistent with our internal policies for processing payments." "It's a new type of business McCarthyism in the US to deprive this organisation of the funds that it needs to survive, to deprive me personally of the funds that my lawyers need to protect me against extradition to the US or to Sweden," Assange told AFP. The term was coined to describe the anti-communist pursuits of former US senator Joseph McCarthy from the late 1940s to the 1950s. READ MORE
