Breaking Down the Amanda/Declan Scene (23x10) - Part 1

Because I promised I would and I actually really enjoyed how they played it. I’ve seen some people disappointed with it, and while there is one element I wasn’t thrilled with, it really did surpass my expectations because it showed so much character development for Amanda.

Starting off strong with a reminder that Amanda Rollins is the best mom and has been there for Jesse since day one.

I go back and forth on them (and Noah) being with Beth Anne and Jim, but I really think Amanda’s trying to repair her relationship with her parents and that Jim’s probably completely different post-stroke (and off the influence of everything he was on).

She 100% wouldn’t let them around Jesse, Billie, or Mason if they were doing anything similar to what they did during her childhood. Neither would Liv, obviously, so it’s probably a combination of no one around to watch them (because it’s Christmas) and the fact that Amanda’s parents have improved/changed.

I also feel really bad for Mason Rollins—he’s innocent in everything that his mom did, but he’s still got to see her in prison, he (from what we’ve seen) doesn’t have a father, and he’s being raised by his grandparents. I’m sure Amanda also has a lot of feelings about her nephew and is working to make sure his childhood is also as normal as possible to the extent she can.

Yes, you have, and it’s really good to hear you acknowledge that out loud. So many “biological dad comes back” arcs don’t even acknowledge that there was an absence, so I was glad that they had him specifically say this.

I like that it was Amanda’s idea; this clearly means that they talked after Declan basically accosted her in front of her work (but that’s a rant for another day) and set clear expectations and that Declan went along with them (probably out of ease rather than anything else), but they did at least talk like adults.

If you rewatch the scene in 17x02 where Amanda takes the pregnancy test, it’s really clear she’s surprised but happy—she didn’t get pregnant on purpose, but she loved Jesse from the moment she found out about her.

She knew the responsibility that would entail, and she took charge of it from the beginning, even when it was harder than she thought. She grew so much when she found out she was pregnant and I’m very proud of her for being the mom Jesse needed the whole time.

The fact that she’s even able to articulate the issue so well and so calmly shows massive growth on her part—she’s put in so much work to improve herself and I’m so proud of her.

Translation: I still don’t need you. Just because you’re back don’t expect to be in her life, especially not after missing the first six years.

Then we have this whole conversation:

Losing yourself to undercover work that dark has to take a heavy psychological toll, and the fact that Murphy wasn’t the one who got himself out really shows that he wasn’t ready emotionally to do any work on himself (like Amanda did), let alone be a father. Jesse doesn’t need to be around that—Amanda made the right choice.

This interaction makes me think that whatever made Declan go in so far he was lost was obvious to Amanda when they slept together, and that her telling him not to be involved was a conscious decision that she wanted better for Jesse than an emotionally absent father like the one she had. Amanda was protecting Jesse from the first day she found out about her, as she should.

This makes me cry, actually.

Just to add on. Libraries in many cities have 3d printers you can use that charge you only the price of materials. So if you can't wait for the shipping from the engineers, try your local library.

Things You May Need to Hear

"it'll be okay" and "you can do it" are phrases that sometimes fall flat. here's some things you may need to hear:

  • you're good enough
  • sometimes it's okay to not try so hard
  • it's okay to not always be strong
  • you don't have to be anything for anybody
  • don't be so hard on yourself
  • you're worth it
  • it doesn't make you weak to ask for help
  • let yourself cry

“Is she seeing anyone”

“…not uh, not that she talks about”

Iconic move, Dominick 👏🏼

This deleted seen 😘👌🏽 No discomfort, no cringe, just two adults who respect Amanda Rollins and give a shit about her well-being. And Carisi straight up respecting her privacy in not wanting everyone to know 🥺

Nick realizing that there's something else Amanda isn't telling him and then going to Carisi about it IS SOMETHING I NEVER KNEW I NEEDED
