            A kiss…
oh, a kiss, such as it was, is off limits. Lucretia knows this. Despoina knows this. God, watching from above in his holy garden, knows this best of all. Yet, here they are, embracing each other and inches away from lips that could feel each other’s softness at any moment. Why? Was it the mood of this strange, immeasurable night? Was this fate, or fatal error?
Either way, it made Lucretia’s heart pound, a little bird pecking at it’s feeble cage. Surely, her sister could hear it beating away, the way her breath hitched at just the mention of their bond. What was it that made this so special, so wrong? The blood flowing through their veins was shared, and there was nothing that could change that, and yet…she yearned.
Speechless in her own accusations, she lets her eyes slip closed, falling victim to the sanctuary of her sister’s embrace. She lets her lips press against hers, lingering, and pulling away once it becomes more than just chasteness and innocence. She doesn’t know what this is. She’s frightened, and she yearns for more.
“You don’t think this,” She whispers, searching for the words. Act is vulgar? That we are vulgar for thinking it just? I don’t want to lose this- whatever you may want to call it- but God is watching us, sister, especially now. He’s waiting for us to act. What has he written in the stars for us?”
Image

Pulling away to gauge Lucretia’s expression. Her cheeks have changed hues darker, curious wide eyes staring back at her, with fear and wonder. Despoina smiles sweetly, reaching up to stroke her hair, fingers entwine with the softness, looking to send shivers down her spine. “I am sharing a kiss with someone whom I love dearly. There is nothing exploitative about our love, dear sister... There are no filthy eyes to pry in on our closeness... It is but you and I... Alone... Together... There is no shame here.“ Her voice is barely above a whisper as she addresses Lucretia’s concern. The heat from herself matches her sister. Despoina slid her hands back to Lucretia’s face, pulling her into yet another kiss. Deeper this time, savoring the taste of her innocence. Sharply, she inhales through her nose, trying in vain to hold back her desperation, her obsession for her sister, and faltering slightly. If only she knew, but Heaven forbid, she would reel in horror to know of how deeply rooted Despoina’s obsession for her ran. Deep down in her darkest of hearts, beating at it’s center was Lucretia.

Avatar
The mere mention of cars and lights was enough to stir Lucretia’s curiosity- and heart- into wanting so much more. Her sister was being so vague in description, she wondered if perhaps she thought it would be too much for a little peasant girl like her. They’d grown up the same way, hadn’t they? Did Despoina have that same glow in her eyes when she first snuck out, or had she always carried such confidence within her?
She could practically feel the sensory overload that the city would provide, all the world speaking and moving in one continuous motion, together in harmony toward no one single goal. It sounded beautiful, poetic, romantic in it’s way…and she was going to miss out on it for another night.
“What makes the people so strange? What do you notice about them?” Lucretia utters in the space between their lips, a mere whisper in the darkness. “The way they dress, the way they talk…perhaps they’d think us strange if we ever crossed paths.”
She frowns at the thought, knowing that their lifestyle could be considered unconventional in today’s society. To have faith, to be devout, to be utterly devoid of persistent sin and impurities; Lucretia held all of these things in high regard. Her only secret was, well..
“Do you think we’re strange, Des? Abnormal? Does the world? If you know so much of it, you can tell me, right?”
Image

Resting her head against Lucretia’s chest, he could hear her beautiful heart pounding away with all the details. She wonders if it excites her, moving away to see her pipe up with more and more questions. Despoina took in all these intricate, unnoticeable mannerisms. Things that only Despoina could appreciate. What more could she say? If she continued on, Lucretia would never get to sleep. Maybe that wasn’t a terrible thing... Her eyes wander momentarily. “Vulgarity is in no short supply... It is more often that I am unsatisfied with those outside. The freedom makes up for it, I suppose...” “Strange?” Mulling over the question, she gently shakes her head. “My dear, nothing is normal. Frankly, I don’t care what other people think.” Disregard in her tone, Despoina shifts upward, moving Lucretia to face her by carefully placing her hands on either side of her face. “There is nothing strange about us. We share a love, a bond that others could only wish to achieve. Don’t think about them right now.” Placing a kiss upon Lucretia’s soft lips, Despoina wants to savor the moment. God, she hopes Lucretia doesn’t pull away.

Avatar
Lucretia’s features form into a saddened expression, feeling guilty for having made her sister feel like she was being taken for granted. In some ways, all they had was each other, all alone in this world except for these nights and mornings where it would be nothing but smiles and laughter and shared embraces. She would do anything to ensure their close bond could continue forever, like they both wanted-
but it was so hard to believe, sometimes. Despoina was always one to say something and do the opposite, whether it came to her duties or her parents. She became worried that perhaps this was all just a ruse, that Despoina didn’t truly need her as she said she did, and Lucretia would truly end up all alone in this world gone unexplored.
Blue eyes meet green eyes, and there’s a moment of understanding that melts away a little doubt. There’s so much sincerity, so much love that she feels consumed by it and wants nothing less.
“You’re speaking nonsense, sister. No one is going to take me from you. There’s no one but you,” Lucretia begins, concerned that she’d alarmed the other woman. “Who could take me away, hm? Who would dare sever the bond that we share? Not mother, not father, not even that merchant’s son who seems so interested in you- no one.”
Lucretia is absolute in her words, her grimace turning into a smile of concern, hands reaching to cup Despoina’s face.
“If I must wait, then I will. But won’t you at least tell me what it’s like? The people, the places?”
Image

A sigh escapes her. She inhales, only to have her breath taken away when Lucretia touches her face in her soft, silk palms. Despoina’s lips are parted, batting her eyelashes as she speaks. Even though there is a lilting complaint in Lucretia’s tone, Despoina doesn’t mind. Just being around her was enough to quell any anger or frustration inside her. It all melted away. She cups one of Lucretia’s hand, placing a kiss on the inside of her wrist. “I’ll share anything you want. You want to know what I see in the city?” Despoina sits up, leaning towards her seated sister, resting her head, dark curls falling over Lucretia’s nightgown, listening to her heart beat. “There are lights in the darkness, on the streets. Always there are cars. Strange people. Mmm... There are shops... Most of them are closed at night, but I like to look into the shop windows... What else...” As much as she enjoyed her nightly romps, none of that compared to being this close with her beloved sister. Her arms wrap around her, sighing happily. “I might enjoy having you with me one of these nights... No, I’m sure of it... You’ve planted a seed, my darling. There is so much I want to show you.” Keeping her sister safe was her main priority, but being away from her, even for a short while, was agonizing. Her freedom was important, but her sister was more important than anything in this world.

Unsatisfied with her answers, she can’t help but pout more, turning her eyes away from a smile so amused by her. It wasn’t fair, it simply wasn’t fair that Despoina could go out and leave her all by her lonesome as she explored all that the world had to offer- and here Lucretia was tending to flowers and chickens like a simple peasant. Heaving a great sigh, she still manages to settle in her sister’s arms, their warmth shared.
                                               Forever and ever.
She liked that. The words melted inside her thoughts, and yet she couldn’t bring herself to believe them when even now, Despoina was betraying her emotions.
“You can’t win me over with trinkets, sister. I’m not a child anymore, clinging to your skirts and hiding behind you,” She says softly, sighing into the embrace. “If this is to be your home then stay here- or, if you love me at all, you’ll take me with you, so I can see this world you enjoy so much.”
She brings chilled hands upon her back, holding her tightly in an act of contrition. The smell of sweet perfume wafted to her nostrils, indulgent and fragrant.
“You could move from here soon, you know- you’re more than capable of doing so now…and you could take me with you. At the very least, it’ll prevent us from being married off to some merchant’s son and being unhappy all our lives.”
Image

A sigh escapes her. Lucretia was right. Despoina was biting her tongue, withholding certain information from her younger sister. She is so pure, and so without corruption. If she joined in on her nightly pursuits downtown, she would get a taste for how bitter and sobering the real world is. Part of her wants Lucretia to be free with her, to live a life unchained from the conventions of religious obligations... But she is torn. Conflicting interests. Despoina wants her to remain pure, untouched, unharmed. Leaving this place would surely change her. It’s selfish of her to want strongly for her sister, instead of consulting her directly, but her obsession with Lucretia was maddening. Lucretia would be horrified if she knew just how far Despoina would go to keep her sister in her ideal purity. “Lucretia... I’m not trying to win you over... I just wanted to do something nice for you... I’m sorry you cannot see that.” She pouts right back, kneeling down in front of her, as Lucretia remains seated. She places her hands on her knees, almost pleadingly. “I won’t ever let them take you from me. No matter what. That is a promise. Look me in the eyes, Sister.“ Her eyes become large, the possessiveness in her deep gaze. “You don’t belong to any of them. You are so special, my dear sister... No one could ever appreciate you... No one is     She retracts her gaze, looking away as she catches her breath in her throat. “If you want to see the city this will... Not be easy. I know you think something like that is as easy as a flick of my wrist, but it is not so. Give me some time, won’t you?”

Avatar
Despoina’s touch sends ripples down her spine, so comforting that she can’t help but let her eyes slip closed, nuzzling into the crook of her arm. Only a handful of years older and yet so much wiser…that was the only way she could describe her sister. Lucretia had no idea why Despoina always seemed to know what to say, what to do, the right words to soothe her soul.
She’d always thought they’d make a good pair of nuns, sisters forever in blood and faith- but ah, how opposed the elder seemed to the idea. Too many rules, restrictions, and she couldn’t even show her pretty dark hair! That was no life for someone as intelligent as she, who could surely lend her talents to a schoolhouse in the city, were she so inclined.
                                           I’d miss her awfully.
You’re right, as always. I can’t let myself become too engrossed in these thoughts, lest I lose track of where I want to be,” Lucretia muttered, her voice taking on a more troubled tone. “I am happy serving Him. I know that paradise is waiting just beyond this life, with you, and mother and father…I just wish I had more time to catch my breath. I don’t think that’s lazy of me.”
Perhaps she was being a bit petulant, but it was the truth. Despoina, wise and twice as rebellious had disobeyed their parents on a number of occasions, sneaking off to the city in search of adventure past all the fields and pastures.
“It’s simple for you to say these things,” She pouts, her hand coming to rest upon her sister’s. “I know where you go at night.”
image

Despoina’s cheeks stung from smiling, her curiosity sparked such delight in her heart, seeing her so curious, like a child, reluctant to be bound by drab rules and anything considered boring. She remembers her youth, a pang of bitterness that she was not granted the same comfort of an older sibling to lean on, but it filled her bosom with warmth to be able to give that to Lucretia. She deserves this comfort and so much more... “Don’t you worry, my dearest... You will be rewarded for your service to Our Lord. When he feels it is appropriate for you to rest, he will let you rest. Until then... “ Despoina presses her forehead against Lucretia’s, closing her eyes and sighing at the closeness. Having her so near to her heart took her breath away. When she speaks, her voice is but a mere whisper. “The Lord will keep us together. Forever, and ever. You and I... There is so much here for us to see, to know... One day... One day... “ She couldn’t bring herself to finish the verbal though aloud, instead moving upwards to plant a kiss atop Lucretia’s head, reaching around to clutch her to her chest in an embrace. “You must not concern yourself with my nightly endeavors... At the end of it all, my home resides here, with The Lord and you, my dear heart. You’ve always been so curious, haven’t you? Perhaps I could bring you something when I am out tonight.”

Avatar
She couldn’t help the swellings of disappointment clouding her feelings, as if the night had more to offer her than her normal routine. Her cozy home and warm bed were normally such tantalizing invitations for sleep, and yet she could find no reason to go to them. Could this be restlessness? Even the coldness of her skin from the night’s breeze could not away her from her sitting position.
“Do you think…it would be too troubling for us to stay out here? Just for a little while longer?” Lucretia inquired, quietly, turning to look at her sister with big, pleading eyes. “Hasn’t it been too long since we’ve had time to ourselves? Mother and father always watching over us, telling us to do this and that…it’s nice to get away from it all.”
Lucretia hoped against hope that what she was saying wasn’t sin, that the Lord himself was carving out a new path as she spoke. One of independence, the freedom to do as she pleased as long as she served her God willingly.
“Faith shouldn’t be so tiring, should it?”
Image

She can practically feel her sister’s disappointment at having to retire so early in the night. The darkness offered so much more in the way of imagination, of inspiration... Who could resist the night and her many wild temptations? Drawing closer to her sweet sister, Despoina crossed the floor, folding her arms to her chest as she listened to Lucretia beg for mere moment awake, away from their parents and their oppressive presence. “It’ll be our little secret. Just you and I. How does that sound?” More than anything she wants to see that smile, that darling pleasantness that only Lucretia secreted, so pure and untouched as her beauty... “Faith is exhausting. You must give and give, until there is nothing left, and still you must give to Our Lord. That is the way it must be. If you are exhausted, it means you are doing your service. It would hardly mean a thing if we were content in our own laziness, wouldn’t you agree Dear Sister?” Despoina rested her hand on Lucretia’s shoulder, a flat, warm palm gently rubs her back in reassurance, raising her eyebrows after she’d spoke, wanting to ensure that Lucretia understood the point she had just made.

The sun was just beginning to set, all God’s humble creatures rushing into their homes for the night, even in the coolness of spring. Lucretia would normally be joining them, never too fond of the disquieting presence that night’s blanket seemed to cast over her- but something kept her. Perhaps it’s simply in her fate to be here at this hour, she thought…
and her affirmation came in the sound of footsteps, crunching against grass. They are careful, but not nervous, a stride that she knew perfectly.
“Oh, sister! It’s late, isn’t it?” Lucretia began apologetically, twisting long hair around her fingers. “Have you come to fetch me for bed?”
Image

The feeling of a smile stretching across her facial features felt so foreign. Only her dearest, sweetest sister was privilege to see Despoina displaying such emotion. To the rest, a cold pillar, standing to support something greater than herself. Setting a hand at her hip, she motions for Lucretia to approach her. “So I have. Off to bed, darling. Come along.“ There’s something more relaxed about Sister Despoina’s posture, her arms resting slack upon her other features, her face softened. Being around her sister was the only time Despoina truly felt alive; whole. No one could possibly understand these feelings. Just seeing her there, twirling her hair, innocent as a lark, made her heart beat with a fullness that no Earthly pleasures could provide.

“I did not expect to see someone like you here!”  Most kindred chose to visit bars and clubs owned by fellow Cainites. Besides, the woman hardly looked like someone who was out here for a wild party - and so, Jeanne was curious either way. What business might have led her here? If not business, what other motivations may lie hidden? The Toreador had always been a curious little thing, always thirsty for a little adventure.
Her moves were fluid, the elegance of centuries danced away through the nights. One hand came to rest on the dark haired woman’s waist, a coy grin. “Name’s Jeanne, fancy not being the only one here.” There was no need for shouting - she was absolutely positive that she would be heard perfectly well despite the loud music that would shut out any unwelcome eavesdroppers.
Image

Despoina could shiver minutely at the woman’s graceful touch on her waist, a welcome intrusion of her space when in a rut like this. She’d come here looking for something she wasn’t quite sure of, and found herself within the embrace of a beautiful woman all the same- God truly was favoring her tonight. Her eyes rise from the woman’s form, languid, to her own eyes, a coy and friendly smile upon her countenance.

“And what would someone like me entail, Jeanne? Although I’m afraid I might already know the score on that.” She chuckled, moving swiftly and with ease, only the slightest of mistakes in keeping up with an elegant force of nature. “Kindred parties are too...raunchy, like all those years and years of existence has emboldened them to new heights of debauchery. The Kine are much more taut in their morals, if that makes sense. They haven’t seen enough, lived enough- there’s no bars to raise or taboos to break. It’s innocent, and in that way, appealing.”

She tightens her hand around the other woman’s, giving her a twirl before she returned to her position, closer.

“But if you’re referring to a purely cosmetic basis, well- looks can be deceiving, can’t they?”

Avatar
Pamela’s languid laughter echoes throughout the threshold upon hearing the woman’s comment. There’s something strange about her, not quite human – Ivy senses it in the veins of her vines and leaves, no life pulses from the stranger in small shockwaves like others. There was also the question of her attire, heavily modest yet ornately designed, barely a semblance of flesh revealed. Pamela, on the other hand, looked every part of the referenced Eve.
Should there be any man here? Isn’t it so tempting to imagine She never had need of him?” she asks. An immediate affinity is felt with the woman and her explicit disdain for the lesser of the human species.  “No, that would defy her creation. Mine is far closer to the likes of Lilith… in both the nature of her name and spirit.”
Image

“Were that only the truth, humankind would not be so desolate as it is. Such anger rises from men, from Adam, from God Himself...the biology of their world exists only in politics and violence, taking no time for simple, beautiful things.” Despoina chuckles, a smile seeming permanent on her face as she gravitated toward the proclaimed Lilith, eyes taking in her divine form. Leaves, vines, all leading to the woman that belonged within nature taking it’s autonomy back.

“Surely a man couldn’t appreciate Mother Nature as only woman can; they liken a rose to mere shrubbery meant to appease their wives. They pluck flowers like weeds, no wiser nor self-aware than a mere child would be. And you, my dear- I cannot imagine the disrespect thrown your way by many a man, unaware of proper etiquette. ‘Tis truly a shame Lilith will never be taught to the masses as she is, as she was meant to be.” She sighed, making a note to incorporate her in her sermons.

Why don’t you tell me if you know her so well?” he challenges smugly. Her sister’s naivete is not a trait that needs to be pointed out; it’s been laid bare in her searching gaze, her innocent purpose she fervently spewed, both manifesting in the painted piece beside him. “Takes a sinner to recognise a saint though, don’t it?” A backhanded implication, spoken with a single look – unwavering and deadset upon his accuser.

“What do you want me to say? That I’ve drank the wine while it was warm and now I’ve had my fill I’m just… philanderin’ onto the other side.” He fiddles with a paintbrush laid upon a mixing palette, its bristles coated in blue yet perilously close to a swatch of opaque white. “She’s all milk and honey, ‘int she?”  There’s a lewd comment which dances behind his teeth, threatening to spill from his tongue like smoke churning to billow out from his nostrils and lips, only to make her seethe all the more.

( Bet she tastes like it too. )

He licks his lips, covertly, eyes tracking Lucretia’s oil-embossed figure before begrudgingly returning to her sister. “So when our Saviour saves a prostitute from injectin’ herself dead behind a dumpster it’s all –” he adorns a corporate, American talk-show host twang, “’forgiveness only costs this informational package plus tax!’ but when we start gettin’ post-feminist and mix up the gender roles, the victim ‘int Magdalene anymore?” He raises a dark brow in interrogation and tuts. “And you say you adhere to His rules…”

“You’re talking semantics now. That’s how you men work, always speaking in half-truths, playing silly little games instead of rationalizing your actions. Why should you, anyway? You’ve got all the power here, don’t you? You’re the one painting my own blood like a man incensed. Have you nothing else to do but lock yourself in this stuffy little apartment and go on painting your loin’s desire?” Despoina spat, utter spite and malice present in each word. She could feel eyes of deepest blue settling on her, as if the paintings themselves contained the essence of Lucretia.

Her sister was watching her, she knew, cheering her on even if she didn’t know it. She was so damaged now, she doesn’t know what’s best for her- it’s up to the elder sister, as always, to pick up the pieces of all that she’s left behind. Their family legacy is left in dust and flames, but it didn’t have to be that way. They could run from here, start life anew together, just like it used to be-

“Does she even acknowledge you? Smile at you? Does she let you touch her? Kiss her? Can she even comprehend what you do, what you want?Eyes glance from Alexander, to the various paintings, taking a black glove and sliding it down, down onto a still drying Lucretia, smearing white, blue, black, pink lips so detailed and soft and how does he know-

until her face is nothing but a mess of color with no distinct features and long, long hair.

“You keep joking.”

What made unlife worth living? Jeanne always found a new reason to love this existence. New books to read, new technology to play with… people to meet. Maybe that made the metropoles of this world so appealing. Not even the stench of sweat and old cigarettes and too much alcohol could scare her off. Twohundred years ago, she would have been called a tramp for revealing her ankles in public, but now? There was nothing she could not do, bless the 21st century!

The blonde woman danced like a queen might, effortless grace among the crowd on the dancefloor in the club. Swaying hips, waving arms, flirty glances here and there. At this time of the evening, anything was allowed, yet… For several moments, her gaze was fixed on a particular woman, and slowly her hand came up and she gestured with her index finger as if she was flirting - come over and play, Kindred sister.

Mere flirtation? An invitation for more, perhaps? Despoina was uncertain of the intentions of this woman that captivated the floor, seeming to make the area around her that much brighter. Their eyes met in knowing, yet coy glances, and her lips quirked at their corners to acquiesce her request. A rare thing, this type of attention was, especially to a wallflower, woman to dedicated to her church.

Still...it had been a while. Despoina enters the floor with poised, fluid grace, a far-cry from the gyrating bodies around her, patiently maneuvering through them to get to her target. Her eyes do not leave the other woman’s if she can help it, all the way up until her lips are at the other’s ear, prying for attention and information.

 “You called?”
