hi bestie. im always looking to move to Scotland for grad school. which city are you in now and how are you liking it. (no pressure to answer, luv your blog)

hi bestie. Scotland is fantastic, I’m currently studying in edinburgh and I’d highly highly recommend! im just gonna bullet out some general thoughts and hopefully they help u somehow

  • it’s much smaller than glasgow (the other closest city) and is highly highly walkable. nothing in the immediate area is more than like a 20 minute walk unless you live in an area further out from the center (Leith, Portobello, etc)
  • very safe at night! take that with a grain of salt because it is still a city etc etc but ive never had an issue walking home late at night. trying not to do that because it’s probably just dumb luck, HOWEVER spiking girls in nightclubs is 10000% a real concern here
  • it’s kind of like a college town, so when people go home for the holidays there is a noticeable drop in the population (especially old town, where the university campuses are)
  • the best south asian and malaysian food i have ever had. apparently chicken tikka masala was invented in glasgow but whether or not this is true just know you can walk 5 minutes in any direction and have the best curry of your life
  • I’ve met people from 25+ countries since arriving, the student population in edinburgh skews highly towards internationals so you get to talk to people from all over the world which was v cool
  • pronouncing scottish town names is an olympic sport and I have to look them up on youtube constantly
  • i haven’t traveled much because of covid but it’s relatively easy to get around the rest of scotland and down to england by train or coach (it’s less than an hour to glasgow so if im just feeling like a day trip out somewhere that’s where I go)
  • there is a dormant volcano in the middle of the city that you can climb
  • it’s an expensive city to live in and finding a flat will become a full time job but i would absolutely go for it

that’s just the first thing that came to mind but if you have any other specific q’s just let me know!
