I have literally been writing a self indulgent "the gang goes backpacking on Naya Pradesh" story in my head for months now. I wish I had time to draw it. Shyam is the one who is most interested in camping and would be the hike planner (despite having the poorest walking endurance...). Wilderness waste management would get weird with a multispecies posse, would probably have to bring a portable incinerator lavatory.

This week on Runaway to the Stars. I'm still undecided on whether I want to ping social media every time it updates, or do weekly updates like this. And also whether to do short cropped posts with a link, or post full comics... so I'll try some things out and see which feels the least weird to me. Streaming comic art again.

It makes me feel a little insane to think about how cave paintings and stone carvings are the iceberg of paleolithic art. Those are the artworks we associate with their time period because they're the only thing that survived long enough for us to see. So much of human history has literally rotted away.

The two main characters of my short story Airsled, Vrazi the diver avian and Piawii the pygmy avian.You can read more about their species here. Vrazi is holding the cord of money they used to buy Piawii's indentured labor, and Piawii is holding Vrazii's tea pipe.

The tea pipe was a funny compromise that turned into worldbuilding, because Vrazi felt like the type of character to smoke a cool pipe, but avian lungs are too delicate to handle the high concentration of airborne particulates found in leaf smoke. Smoke inhalation has a lot more immediately deleterious effects to them than to humans. I split the difference by giving them a steaming hot cup of [insert addictive stimulant here] with a pipe-like handle for drinking on the go. 

This design got turned into stickers and put on the back cover of the new printed edition.

Simon Roy (@simon-roy) asked me to invent a guy (alien organism) for his newest book, Refugium, which comes with a guy emporium (alien life guidebook). There's a kind of radially symmetrical bug called pinwheels on the planet that will split into wedges as a defensive mechanism, so I Junji Ito'ed them into a eusocial spiral that workers snap off of once "ripe."

Refugium is out on Kickstarter right now and if you like alien ecology, failed utopias, and frontier stories I can highly recommend it. I've greatly enjoyed the previous books from the same universe.

There's always a bug you missed!

This is a coincidence because I'd originally wanted to launch on the first of April, but website work got drawn out. In retrospect that probably would have been an even worse idea though

I finally (got help) slapping Wordpress into shape and Runaway to the Stars is now releasing as a public webcomic! Thank you so much for your support over the years, and sticking with me while I'm slowly chewing my way through this book. I'm very excited to share this story! It'll be updating every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday thanks to the massive Patreon backlog. Patreon will continue to update as I finish pages, which happens on a sporadic non-schedule.

If you experience bugs with the site report them to me. Some things may occasionally break, as coding problems tend to be a very "whack-a-mole" affair; and I'm still getting used to the interface.
