When Alec had woken up in this city, he hadn’t expected anything. He hadn’t allowed himself to get his hopes up, hadn’t let himself believe that maybe, just maybe, someone he knew was here. He tried his best to ignore the hollow space inside his chest where his parabatai connection with Jace usually pulsed, how quiet it seemed without Isabelle to liven things up. He tried not to think of how cold his hands always seemed to be without Magnus’s fingers twining through his own, how dull the days seemed without Max’s bright laughter. Alec tried not to think at all, really, if he could help it. It had never occurred to the Shadowhunter just how dependent he was on his family, not until they’d been taken from him. Not until he’d been left to wander by himself. It was an almost physical pain, constricting the muscles in his throat and chest. Truth be told, he didn’t know what to do.
Even now, as Alec picked his way carefully down one of the streets of Hive City, the aching hollowness seemed to eat at him from the inside, stretching out to walk beside him in the space where those he loved usually occupied. The way the sun made the glitter in Magnus’s hair sparkle was imprinted on the back of Alec’s eyelids, and he thought he’d do anything to see it again. And then, just like that, like a merciful god had heard the Shadowhunter’s plea, his wish was granted. Out of the corner of his eye, Alec caught the glint of something shiny, and his head turned almost instinctively. And it was as if someone had shot him in the chest.
❝ Magnus. ❞ The name came out a gasp, all breathy air and want. All the despair and pain Alec had built up in the last few days, born of the separation from all that he knew, gathered in his chest and burst behind his eyelids, sending constellations skittering across his vision. Because there stood the love of his life. ❝ Magnus! ❞ And this time the name was a shout, equal parts desperation and relief, and Alec was running as fast as his Shadowhunter muscles would go. He practically collided with the warlock, a crazy grin on his face, breathless, his cheeks flushed with color. ❝ I didn’t—I never—I thought I’d never see you again! ❞
