Fight & FlightAlyssa Winans

Animal Name: Fight & Flight (Hare)

Mystical Attributes: Camouflage and a keen eye.

Healing Properties: F&F is fantastic at taking on both your fear and anger, leaving you free to feel peaceful and rested.

What would a person use it for: Flight guides in issues both big and small, from optimal plant-watering frequencies to career/relationship advice. Fight protects, from both external threats and personal insecurities.

History: F&F was born like all other hares: long-legged, swift, with a healthy dose of precaution. There were many predators, and it quickly learned to dash and conceal. Throughout its life, however, it grew conflicted and weary of running at the hint of its own shadow. It’s form grew large and restless, shifting to match its contrary nature. It now guides those who similarly find themselves at odds with themselves.

Why this is your chosen creature: I was always very attached to rabbits/hares as a child, and that has only grown as an adult. Their ability to be fearful, quick, watchful and curious has always resonated with me. I often find myself conflicted and pulled between two extremes, and that’s something I find reflected in F&F’s inherently problematic duality.

Time capsule moment! Something I drew almost three years ago for LGAL’s Animystics show. It’s amazing to think how much has happened since then.

Hey everyone! I just wanted to say that one of the most exciting art projects I’ve been a part of is LIVE on Kickstarter!  Honestly, I can’t say how excited I am to be included. The compilation is unique in that it focuses on showcasing the personal voice and vision of each artist with original works created specifically for the journal.

On a personal note, this is the sort of artist-centric compilation that I would love to see more of in the future, and I’m looking forward to a closer look inside the minds of many artists I already admire. So please check it out and share if you can! Any help would be much appreciated. :)

Very excited to announce that the See America book from the Creative Action Network, National Parks Conservation Association, and Chronicle Books is launching in a week! The book contains a few of my pieces, as well as 50+ other artists.

Preorders can be found HERE, and more information about the book is available HERE.

I highly recommend for any folks into national parks or landscapes. :) Special thanks to everyone involved in putting this one together.

Thrilled to be able to show this poem piece for Cricket Magazine! I loved reading (and rereading) what Cricket issues we had when I was young, so it has been very special for me to be able to contribute as an adult.

Many thanks to AD Karen Kohn! Also, a hefty nod of respect to writer Edna St. Vincent Millay for the lovely poem. She was a force.

“Time & Distance”

Beginning my 2015 upload backlog with my complete contribution to the most amazing Pepper Breath! digimon zine by Pyrite Press. Comics are way out of my comfort zone, so I have to admit this one was a struggle-- but I’m so glad I gave it a shot. Special thanks and congrats to cool humans Angie, Ody, and Bryce for tackling such a tremendous project.

Tragically (awesomely!) they’re all sold out, but I do have one extra copy if there’s a desperate Digimon fan out there.
