the world was silent.

when we were screaming from our screens to your faces that we were at war, you were silent.

when we were screaming from our basements that we are being attacked, you were silent.

when we were crying from our pain of having to fight for our land again, you were silent.

no one came.

no one came to help us. no one posted to bring attention to us. no one cared and no one cares about us.

they invaded us. they tried to destroy us, kill our men, rape our women, leave our children orphans, take away our land, burn down our churches and break our cemeteries where my grandparents are buried.

but the world was silent.

who cares about a small piece of land no one claimed but many, including me, call their motherland? who cares about a small nation with a weird dialect? who cares about us? we are landlocked, have barely any resources, we are not interesting to the world. why speak about us? why bring any attention to us?

that’s why the world was silent.

you say we don’t understand your pain. but we do. oh how we do. but you didn’t know about us. or cared to know about us.

how about instead of teaching our daughters that if they aren’t married at a certain age there’s something wrong with them we start teaching our sons not to be intimidated by ambitious women

🇦🇲 We were cheated, betrayed and sold by our commander-in-chief. Our brothers, sons, husbands and fathers died in vain, because we have a worthless piece of shit for a commander. I pray for you, beautiful souls. We will not forget you. Thank you for bravely defending our Motherland. I pray for you, beautiful soldiers. You did not deserve this. I pray for you, my Artsakh. My beautiful land. I am sorry you did not get to have a better leader. I am sorry you were ripped in pieces. I am sorry you are devastated. You did not deserve this. 💔

🇦🇲 I was born in the glorious town of Stepanakert, Artsakh, with nature so beautiful, many compared it to the beauty of Switzerland.

In 1991, when Soviet Union collapsed, a war started between Armenia and Azerbaijan, each claiming it was their land to own. But it was ours, of the people of Artsakh.

We were sheltered in basements with rats and cockroaches, no heat, no water, no food. Babies, children, elderly, women. All hiding in cold basements, while our fathers, brothers, husbands and sons fought for our freedom.

A ceasefire was signed in 1994, but that didn’t lead to a resolution. My homeland has been the apple of discord ever since.

And now, in September 2020, my homeland is under attack once again. With children and women and elderly being forced to hide. With men, fathers, sons, brothers and husbands being forced into a full-blown merciless war.

I hope none of you ever wakes up to a message that a war has started and your country is under martial law. I hope all of you always have peaceful skies above your heads. And I hope this makes you speak up about my land, my Artsakh.

I'm a simple girl, is it too much to ask for a broody handsome suitor to stroll across a field, in the morning fog at dawn, to tell me that I've bewitched them body and soul, and that they love me and never wish to be parted from me from that day on.
