I have been summoned from a long hiatus by an anonymous inquirer to inform you that you are incorrect in your assumption that this is biologically impossible.
Intersex is not a new term. Though the word is generally used to describe someone who was born with a variation of both male and female reproductive organs, it can be applied to this situation, given that it would hypothetically have the same result.
Being interex is not an easy life to live, because of the physical and mental complications. Physically, the body cannot sustain the needed amounts of testosterone and estrogen to have both the male and female reproductive systems fully operational. And that’s only if both sexual halves have all of the needed parts and are fertile. Many of the people born this way undergo surgeries which can be very risky, not to mention that people born with infertile testes have a large risk of developing testicular cancer.
Mentally, the person will struggle with what societal gender role they belong in. Some people may put themselves into the more acceptable gender role that their physical characteristics dictate, which can possibly cause the person to feel as if they aren’t truly being themselves. Many actually come to despise gender roles and go against the norms, being mistaken for transgender at times.
Though we’ve never specifically seen two different sexes be mutated together in the show, we have seen that the mutagen does it’s best to completely morph the two genetic codes as seamlessly as possible. The best example being the Cockroach Terminator, who was a perfect genetic balance of cockroach and computer technology.
In the case of Raphael, it technically is possible that this could occur, given the unexplored scientific properties of mutagen. If Raphael was born a female turtle and was mutated with the DNA of a human male, Master Splinter, then it is possible that the different reproductive codes could’ve created a similar imbalance that someone intersex would’ve had while still in the womb.
It’s possible that Raphael could have a uterus and ovaries, but no vaginal canal and vulva leading to them. The uterus and ovaries would obviously have to be infertile, otherwise it would’ve caused huge complications for him as soon as he hit puberty, which there is no canon suggesting such. This leaves Raphael with a only male reproductive organs on the outside of his body, and Master Splinter more than likely would’ve never guessed that his child was anything other than his son.
Though it is unclear how much the turtles actually remember of their life before their mutation, if Raphael was indeed intersex and had even the smallest of inklings that he used to be female, then it would most certainly lead Raphael to dislike his own body.
Given that his physical characteristics lean more towards the stereotypical male, that his father would’ve been pushing on him from the beginning that he was a male, and because it would be more socially acceptable in their small society of all males for Raphael to also be male, it is possible that he would’ve subconsciously chosen to follow that gender role.
And, as he grew older and fully began to realize what accepting the stereotypical male gender role truly meant, it is possible that Raphael could have started overcompensating his ‘manliness’ in an attempt to hide a part of himself that he deems wouldn’t be acceptable of a male. This could, in turn, create a lot of bottled up frustration and anger that could easily be the cause of Raphael lashing out.
However, this is all hypothetical and this could all just as easily not be what actually happened. But it is still possible.
And as Mun-2 of the TMNT-2012-Headcanons blog, I just wanted to say how surprised I was to find an ask in my inbox about my other blog. And then, I was even more surprised to find this kind of hate on one of our headcanons.
Negativity is not appreciated on our blog, especially since it is meant to be a judge-free zone where TMNT 2012 fans can submit their thoughts. It takes a lot of courage to submit something to a blog in general, regardless if the anonymous button is checked or not, so your words of discouragement are not valued by anyone in the slightest.
A lot of people on the Internet are very fragile in mind, and sometimes it only takes one hurtful comment to send them over the edge. And given the recent suicide letter posted by a loved and active member of the TMNT 2012 Tumblr community, I think I speak for all of us when I say you, and everyone else for that matter, should think twice about what you type before you click the reblog button. Because, for all intents and purposes, it could save a life.
