Illness to Wellness: Stumbles and Victories

@illness-to-wellness / illness-to-wellness.tumblr.com

My name is Emmie and I'm trying to make a difference by speaking up. Future hospital chaplain, follower of Jesus, survivor and thriver, graduate student of divinity, musician, photographer, traveler, Sigma Phi Lambda sister, goofball, and optimist. I write my diagnoses here because they are the ones that I post about the most, not because they are the most important thing to know about me. Fibromyalgia, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), bipolar disorder type II, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and subclinical PTSD and generalized anxiety.

Things That Helped My Health in 2023

It's been a while! Here are some reflections followed by ideas about what's been most helpful to my physical and emotional health recently. All my love, Emmie

This post is comprised of some reflections followed by ideas about what’s been most helpful to my physical and emotional health recently. Well, hello; it’s been a while! I’m not going to lie – it surprised me when I woke up this morning with the motivation to write an update. Writing and sharing my journey publicly used to be one of the biggest tools of my recovery. These days, it’s been…

Identifying & Living By Your Values During a Pandemic

Identifying & Living By Your Values During a Pandemic

This piece was originally published on Sweatpants & Coffee. It’s based on the Pick 5 piece I did a few years back. My ritual of welcoming in each new year is taking time to identify my values. Trying to make New Year’s resolutions just… hits differently during Covid, especially as we face so many factors around us that are out of our individual control. (And yes – it’s the end of January. And I…

Let’s talk about the current state of healthcare for the trans community. While there have been many improvements in care for gender-diverse folks in recent years, it’s no secret there are still alarming and unacceptable disparities when it comes to accessing gender-affirming care. The landmark 2015 US Transgender Survey, the largest survey of transgender people to date, found that 33% of our community who had seen a health care provider in the past year reported having at least one negative experience related to being transgender, and 23% of respondents did not see a doctor when they needed to because of fear of being mistreated as a transgender person.

Warning: God has slipped the noose.

We must confirm the worst

of our righteous fears—

God has escaped the mosque,

the synagogue, the church

where we’ve locked up God for years.

We repeat unto you:

God is on the loose.

Henceforth beware:

You may find God in heathen beauty.

You may stumble upon God unaware.

Take appropriate measures:

You may have to behave

as if each human being

could reflect God’s Face.

Into the crashing sound, into wickedness, she cried, No one, no, nor no one million ones dare deny me God, I go forth along, and stand as ten thousand. The Divine upon my right impels me to pull forever at the latch on Freedom’s gate. The Holy Spirit upon my left leads my feet without ceasing into the camp of the righteous and into the tents of the free.

[ID: 5 pale pink boxes with darker pink text on them.

The first box has a header saying “Different types of hallucinations @speakingofpsychosis “ There are four boxes in a white to pink gradient that say “Auditory” “Visual” “Olfactory and Gustatory” and finally “Tactile”.

The second box has a header saying “Auditory” with a sub header saying “Auditory hallucinations are the most common type of hallucination. Ever person will experience them differently, but common auditory hallucinations are:

  • voices
  • footsteps
  • clicking or tapping
  • crying
  • music

Not everyone who has auditory hallucinations will hear voices. It is important to note that hearing voices does not make someone “violent” as portrayed in some media.”

The third box has a header saying “Visual” with a sub header saying “Visual hallucinations involve seeing things that aren’t there. Hallucinations may be of

  • objects
  • visual patterns
  • people
  • animals or insects
  • lights
  • distortion

It is never appropriate to tell a psychotic person that what they’re hallucinating is real, a spirit, or a religious vision. This is incredibly harmful and can cause the person to spiral further.”

The next box has a header that says “Olfactory & Gustatory” It has a sub header saying “Olfactory hallucinations involve your sense of smell. You may hallucinate pleasant or unpleasant smells. Common olfactory hallucinations are:

  • Flowers
  • burning plastic
  • various foods
  • body odor

Gustatory hallucinations involve your sense of taste instead of smell. The tastes are usually unpleasant or off putting”

The final box has a header that says “Tactile”. The sub header says “Tactile hallucinations involve the feeling of touch. Common hallucinations are

  • Hands
  • Insects on the skin
  • Organs “shifting” or moving
